Randy Pausch Cancer Update
Randy Pausch cancer update 2008: Randy Pausch, 47, has died.
Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose “last lecture” about facing terminal cancer became an Internet sensation and a best-selling book, died early Friday at his home in Virginia, university spokeswoman Anne Watzman said.
In August 2006, Randy Pausch was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer. He pursued a very aggressive cancer treatment, however, he was told in August 2007, the cancer had metastasized to his liver and spleen, which meant it was terminal.
His popular last lecture at Carnegie Mellon in September 2007 garnered international attention and was viewed by millions on the Internet.

Improve your credit score
Improve your credit score
Get copies of your credit report--then make sure the information is correct.
Go to www.annualcreditreport.com. This is the only authorized online source for a free credit report. Under federal law, you can get a free report from each of the three national credit reporting companies every 12 months.
You can also call 877-322-8228 or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form at www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/include/
requestformfinal.pdf (PDF 40 KB) and mail it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
Pay your bills on time.
One of the most important things you can do to improve your credit score is pay your bills by the due date. You can set up automatic payments from your bank account to help you pay on time, but be sure you have enough money in your account to avoid overdraft fees.
Understand how your credit score is determined.
Your credit score is usually based on the answers to these questions:
Do you pay your bills on time? The answer to this question is very important. If you have paid bills late, have had an account referred to a collection agency, or have ever declared bankruptcy, this history will show up in your credit report.
What is your outstanding debt? Many scoring models compare the amount of debt you have and your credit limits. If the amount you owe is close to your credit limit, it is likely to have a negative effect on your score.
How long is your credit history? A short credit history may have a negative effect on your score, but a short history can be offset by other factors, such as timely payments and low balances.
Have you applied for new credit recently? If you have applied for too many new accounts recently, that may negatively affect your score. However, if you request a copy of your own credit report, or if creditors are monitoring your account or looking at credit reports to make prescreened credit offers, these inquiries about your credit history are not counted as applications for credit.
How many and what types of credit accounts do you have? Many credit-scoring models consider the number and type of credit accounts you have. A mix of installment loans and credit cards may improve your score. However, too many finance company accounts or credit cards might hurt your score.
To learn more, see the Federal Trade Commission's publication on credit scoring at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre24.shtm.
Learn the legal steps you must take to improve your credit report.
The Federal Trade Commission's “Building a Better Credit Report” has information on correcting errors in your report, tips on dealing with debt and avoiding scams--and more.
Beware of credit-repair scams.
Sometimes doing it yourself is the best way to repair your credit. The Federal Trade Commission's “Credit Repair: Self-Help May Be Best” explains how you can improve your creditworthiness and lists legitimate resources for low-cost or no-cost help

The Open Championship 2008. The Open returns to Royal Birkdale.
The Open Championship returns to the Lancashire Course at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th July 2008. This will be the ninth time Royal Birkdale has hosted the Championship, from Peter Thomson's win in 1954 to Mark O'Meara's in 1998.
The Royal Birkdale Golf Club is situated in the North West of England, on the same stretch of coastline as Royal Liverpool and Royal Lytham St Annes, both also Open Championship venues. As well as England's Golf Coast, the Northwest region also contains Liverpool, Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria. Local hotel accommodation has likely all been reserved, but if you're visiting any other time then consider one of the hotels in Southport.
6:30 AM 17 July - And they're off; through driving rain, Craig Parry starts the 137th Open Championship
I'll be pulling on the sou'wester soon and making my way to the course so there won't be any/many updated during the competition. As always, the Open Golf coverage on the BBC should be excellent.

Miss Venezuela wins Miss Universe 2008
Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza was crowned Miss Universe 2008 at the Crown Convention Center in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Monday.
The 22-year-old Miss Venezuela edged a fellow Latina, Miss Colombia Taliana Vargas, who won 1st runner-up.
The second, third and fourth runners-up were Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Russia and Miss Mexico, respectively.
"Actually, God made men and women different. But the big difference between women and men--it doesn't matter what kind of life they live--is that men think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight. Women, no. The faster way to go to a point is to go through curves and fixing every curve," Miss Venezuela answered international judge Louis Lacari.
Before the special announcement, Miss Venezuela, who is into interior design and learning new languages, was among the crowd favorites.
She wore a beautiful yellow night gown when given the 18K white and yellow gold crown, which was valued at $120,000. She is the 57th Miss Universe.
The crown was given to her by Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori of Japan.
Earlier, the Miss Congeniality category was awarded to Rebeca Moreno of El Salvador and the Best National Costume award was handed to Miss Thailand Gavintra Photijak.

Miss Venezuela is Miss Universe 2008
Miss Venezuela is Miss Universe 2008
NHA TRANG, Vietnam (AP) — Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row.
An elated Dayana Mendoza received the crown from her predecessor, Riyo Mori of Japan, and then prepared to meet a gaggle of reporters. Miss Venezuela, 22, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure.
Tension got under the skin of Crystle Stewart of Texas, the second Miss USA in a row to fall down during the Miss Universe pageant. She tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance.
During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on You Tube, where the video was shown over and over again.
Like Smith, Stewart quickly stood up after her fall and continued on as if nothing had happened.
Stewart, 26, is a motivational speaker and former track and filed star who is working on a book called "Waiting to Win." The Houston native plans to open a character-development school for young children and has worked with autism victims in the Texas schools.
The final five contestants included four from Latin America: Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela. Rounding out the final five was Miss Russia.
Miss Colombia finished second behind Mendoza.
Miss Thailand won the prize for best national costume and Miss El Salvador was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality.
During her interview with the judges, Mendoza was asked who she thought has it easier in life, women or men.
"God made us to share and have differences," she replied, then highlighted what she regards as the different thought processes of men and women.
"Men think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight," she said. "Women know that the faster way to go to a point is to go to the curves."
The NBC show was hosted by talk show star Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown and broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers in 170 countries.
Eighty contestants gathered in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, vying to succeed reigning Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan.
Sporting yellow, green and orange bikinis, the 15 semifinalists strutted across the stage during the swimsuit competition to the sounds of Lady Gaga, who belted out the pulsating "Just Dance" in a platinum blond wig. Miss Vietnam, Lam Thuy Nguyen, was greeted with a roar from the Vietnamese audience.
The final 10 then competed in the evening gown event.
They performed in front of a panel of judges that included international fashion experts and Donald Trump Jr., whose father, the real estate magnate and TV star, co-owns the pageant with NBC.
This year's contestants spanned a wide range of experiences and aspirations.
Miss Albania was a professional basketball player. Miss Argentina says she has paranormal experiences. Miss Antigua & Barbuda is fascinated by snakes. Miss Angola was in a plane crash while trying to escape a conflict during her country's civil war.
The show has been a publicity bonanza for Vietnam, where beauty contests are very popular. The contest featured segments on many of the nation's most popular tourist destinations, such as Hue, Hoi An, Sapa and Ha Long Bay.
The program set has been dominated by iconic Vietnamese images, such as bamboo trees, conical hats and lotus flowers.
The tuxedoed Springer made a grand entrance on a motorbike — the vehicle of choice in Vietnam where the streets are teeming with millions of the speeding two-wheelers.

Secrets to perfect chocolate chip cookies
Secrets to perfect chocolate chip cookies
Great story by David Leite in today's New York Times detailing his search for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. In the process, Leite discovers a secret of the original Toll House cookie, one that's been left off the back of the Nestle package all these years: Creator Ruth Graves Wakefield let the dough chill overnight. A long resting time was also key to one of the modern-day bakeries Leite visited. He tried out the trick:
To put the technique to the test, one batch of the cookie dough recipe given here was allowed to rest in the refrigerator. After 12, 24, and 36 hours, a portion was baked, each time on the same sheet pan, lined with the same nonstick sheet in the same oven at the same temperature.
At 12 hours, the dough had become drier and the baked cookies had a pleasant, if not slightly pale, complexion. The 24-hour mark is where things started getting interesting. The cookies browned more evenly and looked like handsomer, more tanned older brothers of the younger batch. The biggest difference, though, was flavor. The second batch was richer, with more bass notes of caramel and hints of toffee.
Going the full distance seemed to have the greatest impact. At 36 hours, the dough was significantly drier than the 12-hour batch; it crumbled a bit when poked but held together well when shaped. These cookies baked up the most evenly and were a deeper shade of brown than their predecessors. Surprisingly, they had an even richer, more sophisticated taste, with stronger toffee hints and a definite brown sugar presence. At an informal tasting, made up of a panel of self-described chipper fanatics, these mature cookies won, hands down.

Obama Appeals to Internet Fund-Raising Base with Car Magnet
Obama Appeals to Internet Fund-Raising Base with Car Magnet
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has announced that he is adding an incentive to Internet voters who are willing to donate to his upcoming general election campaign.
Obama is promising to send out a special car magnet to Internet donors who send a minimum fund-raising amount of $15 before next Monday.
This announcement came hours after Obama raised over $5 million at a star-studded celebrity fund-raising gala in Los Angeles on Tuesday for his campaign as well as the Democratic National Committee.
Obama’s campaign promoted its new giveaway in an e-mail sent out to supporters that reads, “Make a donation of $15 or more by the end of the month and show your support with a ‘Yes We Can’ car magnet that’s not available anywhere else.”
The fund-raising efforts last night in Los Angeles were indicative of Obama’s effort to receive strictly private fund-raising money as opposed to his opponent, John McCain, who will be accepting public money for his campaign.

Facing Obama Fund-Raising Juggernaut, Clinton Seeks New Sources of Cash
Facing Obama Fund-Raising Juggernaut, Clinton Seeks New Sources of Cash
Senator Barack Obama is swamping Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton with television advertising in their prolonged battle for the Democratic nomination, putting fresh pressure on Mrs. Clinton’s fund-raising machine to find new sources of money to help her keep pace.
But her big-dollar fund-raising apparatus that was once the envy of the political world is encountering obstacles as many of those in its regular networks of donors have reached the maximum on their personal contributions or grown tired of the relentless press for donations.
The campaign is actively hunting for new wellsprings of cash, while tapped-out donors who want to give more are contemplating financing independent efforts on her behalf that are not bound by contribution limits. So far, however, the independent efforts have been halting at best.
The scramble for fresh resources comes as the money gap between the two candidates is growing. In March, largely because of a continued advantage in small donations given over the Internet, Mr. Obama was able to raise twice what Mrs. Clinton brought in, collecting $40 million compared with her $20 million. He has been spending it freely in Pennsylvania, hoping to stymie Mrs. Clinton in a contest that could determine whether she stays in the race.
In the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s primary, Mr. Obama has spent more than double Mrs. Clinton’s budget on television advertising — $8.1 million to her $3.2 million, according to the most recent figures available from the Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks advertising spending. And with two weeks before more primaries on May 6, Mr. Obama is spending four times Mrs. Clinton’s television budget in Indiana and double her North Carolina total.
The Obama fund-raising juggernaut has some of Mrs. Clinton’s most devoted supporters worried and searching for a new way to support her candidacy. Alan Patricof, a national finance chairman for Mrs. Clinton, said four people had called him in the past month to discuss starting a so-called 527 group — named for the section of the tax code the groups are organized under — on her behalf.
“These are people who have maxed out to Hillary and would like to do a lot more but know they cannot do it through the campaign and thus are looking for other legal ways to give and raise more money under a different status,” Mr. Patricof said. “As I have pointed out, once they do that, they can no longer participate in the finance committee calls and they have to do it outside and away from the campaign itself.”
Such groups are potentially attractive for affluent donors because contributions are not capped as they are for candidates. But campaign finance experts say 527s can be legally treacherous; hefty fines were levied against many of the groups after the 2004 election, and the rules that govern them remain hazy.
The groups are barred from coordinating with campaigns and explicitly calling for the election or defeat of a candidate; instead they are limited to advocating on issues. But exactly what they can say about candidates when they solicit contributions or spend them is sometimes unclear.
One such group, American Leadership Project, which on Wednesday began broadcasting commercials in Pennsylvania praising Mrs. Clinton on health care, offers an indication of how challenging it could be to raise money for an independent effort.
The group has raised only about $1.5 million so far. As a result, it spent only about $425,000 in Pennsylvania, after doling out about $750,000 for commercials in Texas and Ohio earlier this year. It intends to play a more substantial role in Indiana, its leaders said.
Some potential donors have been reluctant to support an effort that they feared could get them into legal trouble. Others wanted the group to attack Mr. Obama, a tactic the group’s leaders have resisted.
Almost all of the group’s money has come from two unions that have endorsed Mrs. Clinton, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which has contributed $1.2 million, and the Machinists Union.
But the list of individual donors is telling in that eight of the nine people who gave $5,000 or more to the group had already given the maximum $2,300 donation for the primary to Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Air McFly Launch Madness
Air McFly Launch Madness
Nike launched a limited edition of a BACK TO THE FUTURE related shoe. Chaos and Deloreans ensued.
It may seem like I’m late to the party on this one, but I swear, I’m not––I saw the TV version of this CNBC story last week, so I knew that Nike launched a limited edition sneaker last weekend called Air McFly, based on the self-tying shoe that will apparently de rigeur for hoverboard flights in the very near future, assuming the very near future looks anything like Back to the Future 2. I knew that fans had been clamoring for the sneaker for years; I knew that there’d be great demand, but extremely limited supply. What I did not know, was that the shoe’s launch, at a single store in Santa Monica, turned into a some kind of fan fest, complete with lines around the block (some waited over 24 hours, according to HypeBeast) and a special appearance by Kobe Bryant, who arrived in a DeLorean (what, Michael J. Fox wasn’t available?) Photo evidence and related links after the jump; above, a video from last year setting the Air McFly lobbying campaign to song.
First, here’s the shoe, courtesy of HypeBeast:

Ischemic Heart Disease
Ischemic Heart Disease
The potential value of echocardiography is ischemic heart disease lies in two areas: assessment of left ventricular function and diagnosis of complications that arise as sequelae of infarction.
Unfortunately, many patients with ischemic heart disease are overweight or heavy smokers, and have large `barrel' chests with hyperinflated lungs. These factors make complete echocardiographic visualization of the left ventricle difficult. Even a limited examination is at times impossible in some patients. Such limitations must be borne in mind when assessing the potential clinical value of an echocardiographic study.

Obama family sits down with 'Access Hollywood'
Obama family sits down with 'Access Hollywood'
Sen. Barack Obama is not president, but one of his daughters has plans for the White House.
"I enjoy decorating," 10-year-old Malia told NBC's "Access Hollywood" during the Obama family's first interview last weekend. "So I get this whole new room to do whatever I want."
That was one of the cute, candid revelations by the Obama girls -- Malia and her 7-year-old sister, Sasha -- who until now have been kept out of the spotlight.
They sat down with their parents over the Fourth of July holiday with reporter Maria Menounos.
The first part of the interview ran Tuesday; the second and third run tonight and Thursday.
Forget troop drawdowns and sky-high gas prices; this conversation was about fashion and fun -- and Obama's old slacks.
"These pants he's had for probably about 10 years," Michelle Obama said when Menounos asked about her husband's new status as a style icon.
The Illinois senator was also perplexed. "I'm baffled by this whole thing myself," he admitted, "because I hate to shop."
Luckily for Obama, he has his daughters to keep him hip. Malia confessed that she ribbed her father after he greeted one of her grade school friends with a formal handshake.
"You really don't shake kids' hands that much," she told her dad. "You just wave or say hi."

NASCAR NOTES
NASCAR NOTES
Menard earns first career pole
Paul Menard's lap of 185.916 mph barely edged Mark Martin for the pole in tonight's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
Martin's fast lap was 185.870. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joe Nemechek and Johnny Sauter rounded out the top five.
Denny Hamlin will start 15th, Jon Wood 22nd, Jeff Burton 23rd and Elliott Sadler 38th.
NASCAR chairman weighs in
Brian France came in yesterday for his annual "state of the sport" press conference, and weighed in on many items.
When it comes to economics, France had the most to say. He knows times are tough for the auto manufacturers, but he said they have repeatedly told NASCAR "their long-standing positions . . . work well."
France said he is not concerned about the recent decision by Chip Ganassi to cease operations for the No. 40 team, nor worried about any other problems when it comes to the large number of teams in the Cup garage.
"Eighteen months ago, maybe shorter, I was being asked by many of you the exact opposite question," France said. "What we said back then is true today, that these run in cycles. We are not immune to a difficult economy. We have had a number of renewals in the sponsorship department. . . . We will always have teams who are not performing well that will be more challenged to keep sponsors, and that is amplified when we have a very tight economy."
Stewart not worried about rain delays
Tony Stewart was bitten by rain last weekend at New Hampshire. He had better luck with it at this race in 2005 when he captured the victory after several long rain delays.
With a 50 percent chance of rain forecast for tonight's race, Stewart says he'll race all night if need be.
"I don't care if it's at 4:30 a.m.," Stewart said. "It could be at 6:30 a.m. Just as long as the sun's not coming up. That's about the only condition I have. As long as the sun's not coming up by the time it ends, we'll be fine. I'm not really much of a 'sun coming up in the morning' person."
Burton between rock (star) and hard place
Jeff Burton is second in the Sprint Cup points, right below Kyle Busch and one spot ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. That puts his garage stall between theirs, and leads to headaches for the South Boston native.
"It's a pain, to be quite honest, because wherever Junior's car leaves or my car leaves, my car gets full of people," Burton said. "My garage gets full of people trying to take pictures. I like the position we're in on this side of the garage. But logistically, it's been tough." -- Jill Erwin

Brian France offers his take on NASCAR
Brian France offers his take on NASCAR
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - NASCAR chairman Brian France made his semi-annual state-of-the-sport address at Daytona International Speedway on Friday.
Following a few talking points topped by the new car's progress, France answered a slew of questions in rapid-fire succession, ranging from the impending Mauricia Grant lawsuit to franchising to drug testing to competition to NASCAR's continual effort to be more "green."
And there were the questions he tap danced around — particularly in regards to additional foreign manufacturers given the plight of the American automakers.
But it was hard to ignore the economy after another Cup team ceased operation this week, and the car count has decreased to 45 at Daytona, down from a season-high of 53 at the season opener.
As France looked around the half-filled media center, where it was once necessary to reserve a seat, the absence of reporters — especially covering the chairman's speech — was a stark example of how tough times had affected NASCAR.
Like a lot of businesses, France feels the best way to keep his customers — the fans — happy was to offer more bang for the buck.
"As I've said to many of you in the past, we're not immune to a difficult economy," France said. "We're certainly not immune to high energy costs, and that's why the tracks and ourselves are working very hard to ensure that our fans get as much value as they can in coming to our events, because we know the hardship.
"We know how much it costs to fill the tank up, to stay in the hotel rooms and all the things that go on in getting to a NASCAR race."
Although no one was spontaneous or gutsy enough to ask France if he knew how much it costs to fill his Lexus with 93-octane, there was hardly a softball fired in the exchange.
Where do we stand on drug testing?
"We have a long-standing policy that we think works well," France said. "There are different circumstances and different things going on today that might not have gone on when we originated the policy. If there's ways to improve it, and there probably will be, we will and I will have those answers shortly — within a month to six weeks — I would expect a dramatic changes in our policy.
"You can have any policy you want, but if the punishments aren't tough — that's the ultimate deterrent. If you look at lifetime suspensions, which we have several out there today, if you look at what happens on a first infraction, in our sport it's very severe. It probably means your career will be over. A second infraction probably will end a career. A third will get you a lifetime suspension."
What are you hearing from the manufacturers and what are the contingency plans to attract other foreign car companies?
"They're going through very difficult times and I'm not going to read into all of their issues because they would be better to speak to those," France said. "They have repeatedly told us their long-standing positions in NASCAR work well. They're going to market their products — whatever their products are going to be. This is a place where they get to come and they get to actually be part of the sport in a way that is so unique and so different from any other sport. With their challenges and reviews, we'll have to see how that goes.
"I wish they were more healthy. I think they will be at some point. My own view of that is we have high energy prices, and with the kind of vehicles and the long product cycles they have, it might take them some time to get back on their feet, but hopefully, they will."
The allegations in the discrimination lawsuit have gotten a lot of air play. How difficult is it to see your sport in that light?
"Naturally, we would like to not have to be dealing with it," France said. "There's a lot of other things that we need to deal with, but we will. It's a lawsuit, as I've said, and lawsuits take on a life of their own, and it's going through the court system as we speak. My own experience with lawsuits over many years is (that) by the time the facts ultimately catch up to the actual lawsuit, they're usually a whole lot different than the claims that are made on the front end when you're after a lot of money.
"We'll have to see what happens through the court system ... We'll be — you can appreciate — defending ourselves very vigorously, and we'll just have to see.
Is franchising part of our future?
"The teams have had a lot of financial interest of late with private equity and other groups coming in and making investments," France said. "I'm happy to see rather large valuations for them and pumping capital most recently with Petty Enterprises. I would say there's no shortest of interest in financially rewarding the team owners that have good teams. There are those interested in taking advantage if there is an advantage.
"You're talking about franchising and sorting that out. The reality is that closes off competition. That's what it does. We have tended to look at that not in a positive way but the previous question centered around getting new owners in not closing off all potential owners. Then this idea of what value the team owners that paid their dues for a long time really have is kind of being answered by the investment in various private equity firms that have come in and thought they have a lot of value.
"If we thought franchising would add more owners than subtract, would make the competition better or reward somebody that needed to be rewarded, of course, we would look at that. It's an easy thing to talk about. There's many portions of NASCAR that are like the NBA and the NFL, but there are some stark differences for a reason. We're structured the way that works for the racecars on the track and the teams. But it is something that we have looked at many times. It's something I've looked at personally with a dozen different takes on that, but it's something that right now we don't think is in our best interest."
Join the discussion The talk is raging over Mauricia Grant's $225 million lawsuit against NASCAR. We know you have an opinion too. Join the debate right here.

What can you tell us about the investigation into the allegations into the lawsuit and when do you anticipate that the two officials that have been suspended will return?
"We're almost complete with it, and it centers on personnel," France said. "You've got to remember that it deals with personnel whether it's the conduct of Miss Grant or someone else. It's being investigated. We wouldn't be able to get into the details anyway because it violates our own policy. We have to give privacy to the employees that work at NASCAR.
"I will tell you that we've been very thorough. We've talked to 25 or 30 people, and I mean really talked and really reviewed and really investigated. So we have a really good handle on what we think the claims are and some of the conduct of Miss Grant and others, and that's really all I can say. Of course, it's also in a civil lawsuit that has a whole other set of challenges for us to be openly talking about things that might be litigated by a jury."
It's safe to say the competition is healthy on the track, right? What do you say to the fans that say they're not happy?
"We know that some of the drivers have said that it's not as exciting and that carries into how are fans think," France said. "We understand that. That's a natural thing and some of the drivers were struggling with the car, some of the same drivers that weren't struggling a year ago and we anticipated that. I would tell you ... our whole family is built around making sure it's the most exciting racing in the world.
"All the other problems, issues, challenges and policies are all part of the sport. But the reality of getting that right and how importantly we view it, we will make sure one way or another. The races have been on balance very good. My own view is that they're getting better every week. The teams are getting it figured out, and we'll satisfy our fans because that's what we've done for 60 years."
While France was generous with his time, additional questions remained. Has a sponsor been tabbed for the Craftsman Truck Series and if so, will it be Kobalt Tools? Has NASCAR decided to shelve plans for a Car of Tomorrow in the Nationwide Series in order for that tour to survive? Where does the Kentucky Speedway lawsuit stand and will the track receive a date for 2009 if the litigation goes away? And, for a third time, have additional foreign manufacturers been courted to join the NASCAR ranks?
Whenever you have a moment Mr. France, the floor is yours.

Californian defends crown in hot dog-eating contest
Californian defends crown in hot dog-eating contest
It took overtime, but Joey Chestnut defended his crown Friday in the annual hot dog-eating contest in New York. NEW YORK | Joey Chestnut on Friday again took the top spot in the annual hot dog-eating contest on Coney Island — but it took overtime.
After first tying with archrival Takeru Kobayashi in a 10-minute chow-down, Chestnut beat him in a five-dog eat-off.
The men tied at 59 frankfurters in 10 minutes, before being made to gobble five more dogs in a last-minute tiebreaker.
Kobayashi had hoped to reclaim the throne after a loss to Chestnut last year shattered his six-year winning streak.
“He wanted it, but I needed it,” Chestnut said.
Thousands gathered to watch the gluttonous gladiators.
Chestnut beat 20 others who had only 10 minutes to scarf down as many hot dogs as possible, two minutes less than in previous years.
Chestnut, 24, of California quickly pulled ahead. At one point, he led 14-11 over Kobayashi, 30, of Nagano, Japan. Kobayashi fell to third place, but ate his way back to a tie.
Richard Shea, one of the founders of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, said it was the first time in his memory the contest went into overtime.
As usual, Kobayashi’s strategy was to eat all the dogs first, then dunk the buns and eat them. A pause while swallowing the buns meant defeat.
Kobayashi, a 128-pound legend in the competitive eating circuit, told Brooklyn newspapers that he wasn’t feeling 100 percent. He said that the tooth problem and sore jaw that hampered his performance last year were improving, but still troublesome.
Chestnut, at 210 pounds, downplayed his win, which included $10,000 and the coveted mustard-yellow belt.

Ann Arbor’s Anna Willard wins Olympic trials
Ann Arbor’s Anna Willard wins Olympic trials
She broke away with 500 meters to go, right before the water barrier, with fireworks popping in the distance. It seemed an appropriate way to celebrate Anna Willard’s victory in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in the U.S. Olympic trials Thursday night at Hayward Field.
The crowd of 20,000 plus was on its feet when she made the move, and the fans stayed standing when she began pulling away, 10 yards, then 20, leaving Jenny Barringer and Lindsey Anderson trailing behind like ducklings chasing a mother duck.
Just two years ago, Willard moved to Ann Arbor with a dream of competing at the Summer Games in the steeplechase, which makes its Olympics debut next month in Beijing.
She will head to China having attained that and more.
Willard became the new American record-holder in the event when her time of 9:27.59 beat the previous mark (9:28.75) held since last July 28 by Lisa Galaviz.
Willard’s time was also the fastest ever run on U.S. soil.
She will be joined at the Games by Anderson (9:30.75) and Barringer (9:33.11).
Michigan State senior Nicole Bush, who ran near the lead pack for the first half of the race, placed fourth in 9:40.27.
“I didn’t know what I had to run that last lap to get the record,” Willard said. “I was just trying to hold people off. I don’t know how much of a gap I got open.
“It’s amazing – I can’t even comprehend it. Especially four years ago, thinking about where I was. I sucked four years ago. So to see how far I’ve come, it feels really, really good.”
Willard, runner-up at last year’s outdoor championships, knew the competitor to beat was Anderson, whom last month had broken the collegiate record that Willard set in 2007 at Michigan.
“We thought it might take an American record to win tonight,” said Mike McGuire, U-M women’s associate track head coach who also serves the personal coach for Willard. “Jenny (Barringer) went right to the front. It was a faster rhythm than any of those kids were accustomed to.”
Willard’s time at 1,600 meters, according to McGuire’s watch, was 5 minutes. Her previous best at that point in a race before last night had been 5:04.
“That was her strength coming through,” McGuire said of Willard, who colors her hair in funky colors – it’s currently bleached blond with red streaks. “When her race personality comes out, she ferocious.”
Willard came to Michigan at the suggestion of her former coach, Craig Lake, after graduating from Brown University in 2006. She began studying for her master’s degree in sport management at U-M, and was allowed to compete for the Wolverines during the outdoor season that year because she had one season of college eligibility remaining.
She experienced immediate success. A native of Greenwood, Maine, Willard was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year for 2007 after winning titles in the steeplechase, 1,500 and 5,000 meters. She also won the NCAA title in the steeple.
Willard, now a pro, also set a record of sorts for McGuire: She became his first Olympian. McGuire, who has coached in Ann Arbor for 18 years, gave all the credit to Willard.
“She is,” McGuire said Thursday night, “an easy person to coach.”

Voyager 2 spacecraft makes first direct observations of the solar wind termination shock
Voyager 2 spacecraft makes first direct observations of the solar wind termination shock
The Voyager 2 spacecraft, which has been traveling outward from the Sun for 31 years, has made the first direct observations of the solar wind termination shock.
At the termination shock, the solar wind, which continuously expands outward from the sun at over a million miles per hour, is abruptly slowed to a subsonic speed by the interstellar gas.
According to Don Gurnett and Bill Kurth from the University of Iowa (UI), the shock crossing was marked by an intense burst of plasma wave turbulence detected by the UI instrument, as well as by various effects detected by other instruments on the spacecraft.
At the time of the shock crossing, August 31, 2007, Voyager 2 was at a distance of 83.7 astronomical units (AU), roughly twice the distance between the Sun and Pluto.
At this great distance, it took 11.2 hours for the radio signal from the spacecraft to reach Earth.
Shock waves in the thin, ionized gas - called plasma - that exists in space are similar in some respects to the shock waves produced by an airplane in supersonic flight.
Shock waves in space are believed to play an important role in the acceleration of cosmic rays, which are very energetic atomic particles that continually bombard Earth.
The most energetic cosmic rays, which are potentially hazardous to astronauts, are believed to be produced in intense shock waves caused by supernova explosions - immense stellar explosions that occur in massive stars toward the end of their lives.
The termination shock is believed to be responsible for the origin of less energetic cosmic rays called "anomalous cosmic rays."
The recent observations at the termination shock are expected to help physicists understand how the turbulent fields that exist in such shocks produce cosmic rays.
According to Gurnett, "There is no way for us to make direct measure of a super nova shock, so the Voyager 2 measurements at the termination shock provide us the best opportunity in the foreseeable future to understand how cosmic rays are produced by supernova cosmic shocks."

Anna Willard sets U.S. record in steeplechase victory
Anna Willard sets U.S. record in steeplechase victory
Anna Willard set a U.S. record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Olympic Track and Field Trials on Thursday night.
Willard, running in second for much of the race, pulled ahead of leader Jennifer Barringer with about two laps to go. Barringer then faltered, falling back to a third-place finish, but Willard poured it on, pushing the pace to finish in 9 minutes, 27.58 seconds.
Lindsey Anderson was second in 9:30.75, followed by Barringer in 9:33.11.
Willard broke the U.S. record of 9:28.75, set by Lisa Galaviz last July.
Galaviz finished fifth Thursday in 9:48.27, but the race was so fast that she and the rest of the top five all beat Barringer's Hayward Field record of 9:48.50 set in Monday night's semifinal.

First Measurements Of The Solar Wind Termination Shock By Voyager 2 Spacecraft
First Measurements Of The Solar Wind Termination Shock By Voyager 2 Spacecraft
Two University of Iowa space physicists report that the Voyager 2 spacecraft, which has been traveling outward from the Sun for 31 years, has made the first direct observations of the solar wind termination shock, according to a paper published in the July 3 issue of the journal Nature.
At the termination shock the solar wind, which continuously expands outward from the sun at over a million miles per hour, is abruptly slowed to a subsonic speed by the interstellar gas. Don Gurnett, professor of physics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and principal investigator for the plasma wave instrument on Voyager 2, and Bill Kurth, UI research scientist and Voyager co-investigator, said that the shock crossing was marked by an intense burst of plasma wave turbulence detected by the UI instrument, as well as by various effects detected by other instruments on the spacecraft.
Shock waves in the thin, ionized gas -- called plasma -- that exists in space are similar in some respects to the shock waves produced by an airplane in supersonic flight. Shock waves in space are believed to play an important role in the acceleration of cosmic rays, which are very energetic atomic particles that continually bombard Earth. The most energetic cosmic rays, which are potentially hazardous to astronauts, are believed to be produced in intense shock waves caused by supernova explosions -- immense stellar explosions that occur in massive stars toward the end of their lives.
The termination shock is believed to be responsible for the origin of less energetic cosmic rays called "anomalous cosmic rays." The recent observations at the termination shock are expected to help physicists understand how cosmic rays are produced by the turbulent fields that exist in such shocks. Gurnett said, "There is no way for us to make direct measure of a super nova shock, so the Voyager 2 measurements at the termination shock provide us the best opportunity in the foreseeable future to understand how cosmic rays are produced by supernova cosmic shocks."
Kurth noted that while some aspects of the termination shock matched scientists' expectations, a number of the observations made by Voyager were surprising and will cause a number of theories to be revised.
Gurnett noted that Voyager 2, launched in 1977, is moving at a speed of 38,000 miles an hour. Even at this considerable speed, the spacecraft will still take 30,000 years to reach a distance equal to that of the nearest star.
The sounds of Voyager's encounter with shock waves at various planets and other sounds of space can be heard by visiting the space audio Web site at: http://www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu/space-audio/.
The University of Iowa research was supported by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, Calif., a division of Caltech. JPL manages the Voyager mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C

Honda New Bike CBF Stunner
Honda New Bike CBF Stunner
Honda launches CBF Stunner
In an effort to strengthen its position in the 125cc segment, the fastest growing category in the motorcycle industry, Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Ltd (HMSI), on Monday, launched the 125cc CBF Stunner.
The bike, which will co-exist with the company's existing 125cc Shine, would be priced between Rs 47, 070 and Rs 51,655 and would help the company exceed its target of 10 lakh units this fiscal.
"We are expecting to sell around 80,000 units of Stunner in nine months to this fiscal, between July and March and this might help us to exceed our sales target of 10 lakh units for this fiscal," said NK Rattan, head (sales and marketing), HMSI. The seven lakh units of projected sales will come from scooters and the rest will be motorcycles. "We will also come up with two other mass models in this fiscal including a scooter. This would be over and above the high-end 1000cc CBR that the company is planning to launch in India this year," said Rattan. HMSI currently has a market share of 11% at 9,07,000 units sold in 2007-08 and this is expected to go up to 15% in two years after the company forays into the mass market 100cc segment by 2010.

Honda Launches New 125 cc Bike
The Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) introduced its new 125 cc sports bike - CBF Stunner on Monday, June 30. The bike is priced between Rs 47,070 and Rs 51,655 (Ex-Showroom, Delhi). The company aims to sell 10 lakh units this fiscal and it is confident their new 125 cc sports bike will help in revving up sales. Commenting on this, N K Rattan, HMSI Pvt Ltd Divisional Head (Sales and Marketing), said, ‘We plan to achieve a sale of one million units in the current fiscal and the launch of this new bike will help us in materialising this target.’ As far as the CBF Stunner is concerned, Mr Rattan said that the company plans to sell 80,000 units of the new bike this fiscal.
The Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India recorded sales of 9.07 lakh units during the previous fiscal. Earlier the HMSI had decided to build a fresh manufacturing unit, but it now plans to go slow on it. Mr Rattan explained that their present production capacity is 1.2 million units, which can be increased to 1.35 million and this is basically why the company was planning a new manufacturing facility. But he underscored that they are not thinking about this seriously at present. Apart from CBF Stunner, the HMSI will likely introduce two more new models this year. ‘We also expect our bikes above the 800 cc category to launch in FY'09, which will be priced above Rs 10 lakh, said N K Rattan.
