Gay speeds to U.S. record
Sprinter runs third-fastest 100 in history

San Jose was known as "Speed City" 40 years ago for its group of sprinters, but the title shifted here in a big way Saturday as America's fastest citizens put on a dazzling demonstration of their fast-twitch muscle fibers.

In one remarkable group of men's quarterfinal races on the second day of the U.S. Olympic track and field trials at Hayward Field, the American, collegiate, high school, American junior and world junior records in the 100 meters were either broken or equaled.

Tyson Gay eased up at the end of his race but still ran a blazing 9.77 seconds to break Maurice Green's 1999 U.S. mark of 9.79. Only two men, Jamaicans Usain Bolt (9.72) and Asafa Powell (9.74), have run faster.

"I got out pretty good," Gay said. "I had a little stumble but I stayed aggressive through the drive phase. I'm thankful it was a (personal record), but your body can be fatigued after a PR."

Clemson's Travis Padgett, running in the second quarterfinal, won in 9.89 to clip former UCLA athlete Ato Boldon's collegiate record of 9.90 from 1996. Darvis Patton then won the third quarterfinal in 9.89.

In finishing second to Gay in the first quarterfinal, Florida's Jeffrey Demps clocked 10.01 to break the national high school record of 10.08 set by J-Mee Samuels in 2005. Demps, who also broke the American junior record, tied the world junior mark of 10.01 held by Jamaica's Darrell Brown since 2003.

All three quarterfinal races were run with legal aiding wind readings of 1.6 meters per second. In all, six men broke 10.00 seconds and four bettered 9.95. It bodes well for today's final.

"It's been an awesome season for me," Demps said. "The whole running thing is exciting for me."

Gay very nearly blew his chance to make the team for Beijing when he eased up too soon in his first-round heat and finished fourth in 10.14. Gay said he misjudged the finish line when he saw another white stripe across the track.

That didn't please his coach, former Olympic sprinter Jon Drummond, who, as Gay related, lit into his athlete by saying, "Champions don't do that. Make it up."

Gay did, in a big way, and might have had a shot at Bolt's month-old world record had he not eased up in the last 5 meters. As it is, Gay's 9.77 is the fastest time ever run in a quarterfinal.

Compared to the men in their quarterfinals, the women's final did not hold up as the top story of the day, although it was fast in its own right and dramatic. Former LSU star Muna Lee won in an upset in 10.85, followed on the Olympic team by Torri Edwards in 10.90 and Lauryn Williams in 10.93.

Edwards was suspended for doping in 2004 in a ruling that was reduced to a public warning. Williams is the Olympic silver medalist from Athens four years ago.

"The talent was amazing," Williams said of a race in which five women broke 11 seconds. "This is the best field that's ever been put together. All eight lanes were worthy of a trip to China."

Allyson Felix, who had hoped to make the team in the 100 and 200 as well as run both relays at the Beijing Olympics, got a poor start from lane eight and finished fifth in 10.96. She will be included in the relay pool for Beijing.

Lee was in an automobile accident June 16 in College Station, Tex., in which the car she was riding in was struck by a drunk driver. She emerged with nothing more than a sore shoulder and continued training. Successfully, as it turned out.

"I was just coming to make the team," Lee said. "All the girls are good. It was like an NCAA championship again. I felt really good. I knew I could blast it at the beginning and relax at the end. I learned how to do that really well this year. I'm really excited about it."

In the men's shot put final, the Big Three of Reese Hoffa (72 feet, 6 1/4 inches), Christian Cantwell (71-2 3/4) and Adam Nelson (68-6 1/2) earned spots on the U.S. team for Beijing. Nelson, however, had to come from fourth after three rounds to secure his spot on the team with his fourth throw.

Tom Powers:Annika Sorenstam's charisma evolved LPGA

Annika Sorenstam showed up at the first tee resplendent in a maroon and gold outfit. She looked as if she had a hot date set up with Goldy Gopher.

"You think everything is luck?" she said, chuckling. "There is a reason I'm wearing it. Other than it is from my Annika Collection."

She was playing to the crowd a bit by wearing the local colors. But she really didn't need to do that. Annika, 37, is feeling the love here at her last U.S. Women's Open before retirement. The large galleries are lavishing her with affection.

"You're walking out there and you hear everybody saying, 'Thanks for the memories, thank you for what you've done,' " said Paula Creamer, who played in Annika's group on Friday. "And it's true. She definitely has raised the bar for women's golf, and she has had such a big impact on where we're at today."

Today, the LPGA Tour is in incredible shape. It is glamorous, multinational and oozing pizazz — as exemplified by Creamer. The outfits are bold, even sassy. Some of the women looked as if they had stepped directly from the studio makeup chair to the tee box. When they sweat, doesn't that stuff run?

The answer is: apparently not. It's like in the movies, where everyone wakes up looking beautiful and everyone continues to look beautiful all day, even if they get caught in a sandstorm.

Of course, the quality of golf is terrific. And, yes, that's the main thing. But all the other stuff counts, too. We could lift our noses in the air
and say it doesn't, but it does. Personality and attractiveness, combined with talent, really sells.
So Annika is leaving the Tour in extraordinary shape. You know how Tiger Woods is just Tiger and Michael Jordan is just Michael? Annika Sorenstam is just Annika. She may be the best female golfer of any generation. Her 90 international tournament victories, including 72 on the Tour, are unparalleled.

She has brought an enormous amount of attention to the LPGA. Now the young guns are taking it and running with it, even if they aren't always fully dressed while they're sprinting.

Annika was interesting. People wanted to know about her. Despite not being loud or outspoken, she had a certain charisma. She attracted TV viewers, sponsorships and attention. Then, with everyone watching, the younger golfers took it to the next level: paisley outfits, photo spreads, reality shows and personal appearances. Oh, and they can really play, too. People continue to watch.

On Friday, Annika shot a 3-under 70, putting her 1 under for the tournament. She's got a chance. And you can imagine what the people want to see. Annika gets a standing ovation just for being Annika.

"I think they've been great," she said after Friday's round. "They're very, very supportive. There's so many of them here. They're just very golf knowledgeable.

"It's so much fun. It really is. It's very encouraging and inspiring."

Since she announced her retirement in May, effective at the end of the Tour season, there has been quite an outpouring of warmth. There was a time when people speculated on whether anyone was good enough to beat her in a given tournament. Now, they are hoping there isn't.

"I'm trying to play well, but I always walk away with great memories," she said. "The better you play, the more memories you have. But it is special to be here. Like I said, the fans make it special, the U.S. Open makes it special. It's just a wonderful week, really."

She has hit the ball pretty well over the first two rounds, but her putting has been off a bit.

"I love the course," she said. "I think I'm hitting the ball as good as I can. I'm just, you know, going to work a few things with my putter and I'm really looking forward to the weekend."

The already-large crowds will build as the tournament progresses. In a perfect world, Annika would play in the final threesome on Sunday. Even if she isn't in contention, she probably will smile and declare that the world is perfect, anyway.

2008 NBA Draft Grades/Analysis: Portland, Miami, NJ Nets, LA Clippers Top List

The Portland Trail Blazers received one of the highest grades for the organization's deals and selections in the 2008 NBA Draft on Thursday.

The Trail Blazers, who selected Greg Oden No. 1 last year, had yet another great draft, making moves that will couple with Oden's return from microfracture surgery.

The Blazers join the Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers as the teams with the best grades after the NBA Draft.

2008 NBA Draft Grades: Atlantic Division

Atlanta Hawks – B- – Traded their first round pick in the Joe Johnson deal and their second rounder for Mike Bibby. After making the playoffs, it looks like trading the picks was pretty successful.

Boston Celtics – B – After winning the championship, the Celtics picked up a player with immense potential in Bill Walker, who can learn from Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. They also picked up athletic scorer J.R. Giddens

New Jersey Nets – A – After the Richard Jefferson deal, the Nets have freed up $10 million in cap room and picked up two scoring big men in Brook Lopez and Ryan Anderson. The Nets also picked up arguably the biggest sleeper in the draft: Chris Douglas-Roberts

New York Knicks – B – Danilo Gallinari is the European-style player that D’Antoni needs for his style of offense.

Philadelphia 76ers – C- – Marreese Speights doesn’t sell me as being more than a role player. He has conditioning problems and only played 24 minutes a game for the Gators.

2008 NBA Draft Grades: Central Division

Chicago Bulls – B+ – The Bulls selected the point guard of the future in Derrick Rose, even though they have Kirk Hinrich. The marketability of having such a talented player from Chicago playing for the Bulls is something that can’t be scripted.

Cleveland Cavaliers – B- – Getting J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson (in a trade) allows for better rebounding and some low-post scoring.

Detroit Pistons – C- – Trent Plaisted and Walter Sharpe were two surprises and don’t look to contribute any time soon. Deron Washington was one of the draft’s most gifted athletes, but he has to progress as a basketball player.

Indiana Pacers – C – T.J. Ford and Jerryd Bayless would have been a very good backcourt, but the Pacers traded Bayless for Brandon Rush. Rush is good, but he has a lot to prove. Nathan Jawai won’t contribute immediately.

Milwaukee Bucks – C – Drafting Joe Alexander was questionable after trading for Richard Jefferson. Hopefully, Alexander can help with rebounding and true post scoring.

2008 NBA Draft Grades: Southeast Division

Charlotte Bobcats – C- – Why did the Bobcats draft D.J. Augustin when they already have Raymond Felton? The grade would be worse if this was graded on the effect it might have on Augustin’s career. Augustin is the purest point in the draft though. Alexis Ajinca is a risk that needs to prove his worth.

Miami Heat – A – Michael Beasley may become the Rookie of the Year and help form the new “Big Three” in the East with Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion. Mario Chalmers is a huge sleeper, adding a defensive dynamo and solid point guard to a team that needs both.

Orlando Magic – B – Courtney Lee is an athletic shooting guard who can play defense and score effectively. Exactly what Orlando needed, but was Chris Douglas-Roberts a better pick?

Toronto Raptors – B – Traded their one pick for Jermaine O’Neal, allowing Chris Bosh to play power forward solely and Andrea Bargnani to show his versatility. It was worth the trade of pick.

Washington Wizards – C – JaVale McGee is a talented, athletic pick, but his small frame may get him eaten up in the Eastern Conference.

2008 NBA Draft Grades: Southwest Division

Dallas Mavericks – C – Shan Foster can shoot and will be a good backup for Jerry Stackhouse and sometimes Josh Howard

Houston Rockets – B+ – Darrell Arthur and Joey Dorsey are exactly what the Rockets need: down-low scoring and versatility in Arthur, ferocious defense and aggressiveness in Dorsey.

Memphis Grizzlies – B- – The trade for O.J. Mayo would make this grade higher if they didn’t already have four guards that just finished their rookie seasons. No one needed more guards as little as Memphis. Unless they trade one of them, this pick is cluttering.

New Orleans Hornets – D – They traded their only pick in a talent-laden draft for cash considerations to Portland. They could have at least drafted a European that would stay in Europe for a year.

San Antonio Spurs – C- – Although the Spurs don’t need much, selecting George Hill in the first round was not the best selection. James Gist adds athleticism in the post.

2008 NBA Draft Grades: Pacific Division

Golden State Warriors – B+ – Anthony Randolph is a big-time talent, but needs to gain some weight. Richard Hendrix is a solid back-up in the post and might surprise some people next season. Post players are exactly what Golden State needed.

Los Angeles Clippers – A – The Clippers drafted arguably the best duo in the draft: Eric Gordon and DeAndre Jordan. Jordan, a projected lottery pick, dropped all the way to the second round in one of the biggest steals in the draft. Mike Taylor has professional experience and can be good sooner than expected.

Los Angeles Lakers – C – The Lakers traded their first-round pick for Pau Gasol. They went to the NBA Finals. It seems like a fair trade. Joe Crawford is a good backcourt scorer.

Phoenix Suns – B – Robin Lopez can ease some of the pressure from Amare Stoudemire and his touch can extend the paint.

Sacramento Kings – B- – Jason Thompson is good, but No. 12 looked too high. However, Sean Singletary and Patrick Ewing Jr. can be good backups early for the Kings.

2008 NBA Draft Grades: Northwest Division

Denver Nuggets – D – Traded their first-round pick and picked up Sonny Weems in the second round. Not a big day for the Nuggets.

Minnesota Timberwolves – B+ – GM Kevin McHale got the player he wanted in Kevin Love. Love will be the yin to Al Jefferson’s yang, but his passing will allow for Minnesota to have a better, smoother offense. Nikola Pekovic is a project down low.

Portland Trail Blazers – A – Trading for Jerryd Bayless adds a bonafide scorer for a team that almost made the playoffs last season without Greg Oden. Oden returns this year. The Blazers also picked up three picks in 2009 and one in 2010. This is the second great draft in a row for Portland.

Seattle SuperSonics – B+ – Drafting Russell Westbrook gives them a solid combo guard who is great on defense and will compliment Kevin Durant. Trading for D.J. White will help form the young nucleus for Seattle down low. Serge Ibaka has talent but is a project.

Utah Jazz – C+ – Kosta Koufos was a pretty good pick for the Jazz, but going big in the next two picks with Ante Tomic and Tadija Dragacevic was a stretch. The latter two are unproven.

The Minnesota Timberwolves traded Antoine Walker, Marko Jaric, Greg Buckner and the rights to O.J. Mayo (No. 3) to the Memphis Grizzlies for Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins and the rights to Kevin Love (No. 5).
The New Orleans Hornets traded the rights to Darrell Arthur (27) to the Portland Trail Blazers for cash.
Three-team Deal:
The Portland Trail Blazers acquired the rights to Nicolas Batum (25) from the Houston Rockets.
The Houston Rockets acquired the rights to Donte Greene (28) and a 2009 second round pick from the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Houston Rockets acquired the rights to Joey Dorsey (33) from the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Memphis Grizzlies acquired the rights to Darrell Arthur (27) from the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Detroit Pistons traded the rights to D.J. White (29) to the Seattle SuperSonics for the rights to Walter Sharpe (32) and Trent Plaisted (46).
The Minnesota Timberwolves traded the rights to Mario Chalmers (34) to the Miami Heat for two future second round picks and cash. The San Antonio Spurs traded the rights to Goran Dragic (45) to the Phoenix Suns for the rights to Malik Hairston (48), a 2009 second round pick and cash.
Three-team Deal:

• Trail Blazers: A team that already was deep, young and talented only enhanced that crop by executing deals to land two projected lottery picks in Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless and Kansas forward Darrell Arthur.

• Pacers: After shipping Jermaine O'Neal to Toronto, the Pacers found his apparent replacement in Georgetown center Roy Hibbert. A draft-night trade with Portland also landed pick Brandon Rush, guard Jarrett Jack and forward Josh McRoberts.

• Clippers: The Clippers also picked up two projected lottery picks, grabbing Indiana guard Eric Gordon seventh overall. They then picked up Texas A&M center DeAndre Jordan, who dropped into the second round.

LOSERS

• SuperSonics: Grabbing UCLA guard Russell Westbrook seemed to be a reach with the fourth overall pick. The Sonics then followed later in the first round by drafting another obscure project in power forward Serbe Ibaka from the Congo.

Vodafone India Pre-registering Customers for IPhone 3G

Vodafone India Pre-registering Customers for IPhone 3G
Vodafone India has started pre-registering customers for the iPhone 3G from Apple, promising that the device will be available soon, but the company will as yet not disclose when the device will be offered to customers.

The Indian government has as yet to issue final guidelines on the auction of 3G (third generation telephony) spectrum and licenses in India. One of the issues holding up a final decision is whether foreign companies can bid for the license.

Vodafone is however already an operator in India following its acquisition of a majority stake in mobile services company Hutchison Essar, renamed as Vodafone Essar. Vodafone announced earlier this year that the iPhone 3G will be available in India during the year.

In an advertisement Wednesday in The Times of India and on its Web site, the company is offering to pre-register customers for the iPhone 3G. The company however cautions that the device offered by Vodafone is currently compatible only with 2G networks, and some of its features may not work in India.

A Vodafone India spokesman declined to comment further on the company's offering.

Bharti Airtel, another large Indian operator, has also said it will launch the iPhone 3G in India later this year. The company has not specified the date for the availability of the phone to its customers. Vodafone's offer to pre-register customers reflects significant market interest in the Apple iPhone, and may be an attempt to get a marketing edge over Bharti Airtel.

Rapper West scoops two BET awards
Kanye West and hip-hop group UGK have won two awards each at this year's Black Entertainment TV (BET) awards.

West took home the prize for best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration for Good Life, which featured T-Pain.

UGK was named best group and also won video of the year for International Player's Anthem (I Choose You) featuring Outkast.

Alicia Keys and Chris Brown took top honours in the R&B artist categories at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

'Blessed'

Missy Elliott scooped the award for female hip-hop artist, Marvin Sapp took best gospel artist, while the prize for best new artist went to the Dream.

Awards were handed out to Halle Berry and Denzel Washington in the acting categories.

Lil Wayne picked up the best new rap artist award, which was voted for by viewers.

Picking up one of his awards on stage, West told the crowd they were "blessed" to be in the presence of fellow rapper T-Pain, who was nominated for five awards for his work with other artists.

Keys used her award to urge people to vote in the presidential elections

After tributes by Jill Scott and Maxwell, lifetime achievement award winner Al Green performed a medley of his songs, including Let's Stay Together and Love and Happiness.

Speaking backstage at the Shrine Auditorium, he said: "I'm sorry I didn't sing as well as I could. I got scared."

Queen Latifah introduced humanitarian award recipient Quincy Jones, calling the producer "an international artist, an innovator and a leader".

Microsoft Extends Support for Windows XP To 13 Years

Windows XP will continue to be supported for an unprecedented 13 years, Microsoft says. In a letter, Microsoft Vice President Bill Veghte, promised patches and updates through April 2014, three years longer than for previous versions of Windows. His letter also appeared to confirm that Windows 7 will be released in 2010
With many business and individual PC users rejecting Windows Vista, Microsoft took an unprecedented step this week by promising support for Windows XP for a full 13 years. That is three years longer than it has allowed for previous Windows operating systems.
In a letter sent to customers this week, Bill Veghte, a Microsoft vice president, also seemed to confirm that Windows 7 will be released in 2010. That OS, Veghte wrote, will ship "approximately three years" after Vista became available in January 2007.

Avoiding Vista

Meantime, security patches and updates to Windows XP will be provided until April 2014, Veghte promised. In what could be considered an understatement, he wrote, "Our ongoing support for Windows XP is the result of our recognition that people keep their Windows-based PCs for many years."

Many large businesses have avoided upgrading to Windows Vista, which has been plagued with widely publicized problems, including incompatibilities with drivers for legacy hardware and applications. Upgrading to Vista could also be very expensive for enterprises that would need to upgrade older hardware. Many businesses and individuals have opted to buy Windows XP on new PCs.

While June 30 remains the cutoff date for selling Windows XP, retailers such as Dell are still selling preconfigured PCs with XP. And enterprises with volume licensing contracts will still be able to install XP even on new machines.

Downgrade Option

In addition, Microsoft has promoted a licensing loophole that allows new hardware buyers to purchase Windows Vista and then downgrade it to a previous version of Windows. Microsoft has cited such purchases as evidence of support for Vista, but many Web postings have disputed that.

"It's true that we will stop selling Windows XP as a retail packaged product and stop licensing it directly to major PC manufacturers," Veghte's letter says. "But customers who still need Windows XP will be able to get it."

Microsoft will also continue to sell a version of Windows XP to makers of low-cost computers through June 2010. Such machines as the Asus Eee PC are incapable of running Vista and the alternative would be for the makers to install open-source Linux as the operating system.

Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova Win Wimbledon Openers

Venus Williams opened the defense of her Wimbledon tennis title by defeating Britain's Naomi Cavaday on Centre Court today at the All England Club in southwest London. Maria Sharapova, the 2004 champion, also won.

Men's No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia became the highest- ranked player to exit so far, losing 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to Germany's Benjamin Becker.

Williams, seeded No. 7, was broken in the first game of the match, but the 27-year-old American recovered to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 against an opponent ranked 190 places lower. Russia's Sharapova beat Stephanie Foretz of France 6-1, 6-4.

``All in all, I think she just played well,'' Williams said in a news conference. ``I think it's nice to have a really challenging opponent early on.''

Williams, a four-time champion at the only grass-court Grand Slam, is aiming to become the first player to successfully defend the women's singles title since sister Serena recorded victories against her in the 2002 and 2003 finals.

Bee Bother

Williams reached 40-0 on her opening service game today against the 19-year-old Cavaday before a bee landed on her ankle as she was ready to serve. The six-time Grand Slam champion shooed it away, then double-faulted and then lost nine of the next 10 points.

``I didn't want it to sting me,'' Williams said. ``I guess the bumblebee got me off to a bad start.''

Williams and Cavaday stayed on serve until Williams broke in the sixth game and had two further break points in the eighth, which Cavaday saved. In the tie-break Cavaday saved the first set point, then sent the second into the net.

After Cavaday took the first game of the second set, Williams won six successive games to secure her spot in the second round. Cavaday, who held two match points against Martina Hingis at this stage last year, has yet to advance beyond the opening round.

``I was matching her well shot for shot, it's a shame she pipped me in the first set,'' Cavaday told reporters.

On Court 1, Sharapova dominated from the start in the opening set against Foretz, who suffered a first-round Grand Slam exit for a 19th time in 27 appearances.

Becker, also 27, hadn't won a first-round Grand Slam match in his past six attempts.

Graham Bunn also gave DeAnna a letter that he asked her to read when she was ready. And she still hasn’t read it after booting him out of the Bachelorette. The deal about Graham Bunn the professional basketball player is that he is the kind of guy with the kind of emotions and character that you will get from most guys who are into sports and the macho big sensitive guy.

They cannot deal with emotional issues or important issues in an outwardly manner and will definitely keep it within themselves before one day it all explodes. You could see that in Graham Bunn that he was this exact same type of guy and not someone that a Bachelorette like DeAnna would be compatible with.

But there is no escaping how hot Graham Bunn is, and DeAnna definitely felt that way. The Bachelorette was comfortable with him on most occasions until they had to get really personal and Graham Bunn just could not handle that.

Poor fellow must be really sad and dejected at this moment but he will do fine as there must be queues forming up to get a piece of him right now with him leaving the Bachelorette. Whether the decision was made right by DeAnna about Graham Bunn no one will ever know, and that is what the show the Bachelorette is all about. Use of Playstation Network Has Been Suspended on Monday
The use of the Playstation network has been suspended on Tuesday for reported maintenance, leaving thousands of video game players stalled for the day.

Gamers have attempted to use the Playstation network Tuesday, but an error message entitled "The Use of Playstation Network has been Suspended" has popped up on the screen through their game console.

The error message urges Playstation users to try again. Several have made calls to the Playstation customer service hotline to find out why the network is down. According to a report by UK Playstation, the network is undergoing maintenance.

"During this time, access to Playstation Network will be restricted, including no access to Playstation Store for PS3 and PC, as well as no access to play games on Playstation Network," according to a UK Playstation report. The maintenance will end at 5 p.m. EST.

French Pot Ice Cream

French pot ice cream is made from a process known as the French Pot Process. Ice cream that results from it is said to be heavenly in taste and also healthy. It is hard to imagine that any ice cream would be healthy in any way no matter what ingredients they use. Looking at the kind of ingredients that normally go into french pot ice cream you cannot really find anything that can keep it healthy, maybe in relative terms only which is as good as saying that you can eat french pot ice cream all day and never get fat, and that means that it is kinda silly.

Oprah Winfrey really endorses french pot ice cream and maybe it has helped her shed some weight compared to consuming other types of the dessert. But the dessert is the dessert, and since french pot ice cream uses cream and sugar, you will still put on the pounds consuming it in the same amounts compared to other types. But maybe you might not put on so much weight. Then it is up to you whether you want to lose weight, or just put on less weight. If it is the latter, then french pot ice cream can be a great alternative to more normal types of the dessert.
The great thing about french pot ice cream I am told is that they taste just as good as any ultra sinful form of the dessert. Really, can anyone be surprised that is the case given that you are eating ice cream in the first place, whether it is made from the french pot process or not. There are bad tasting ice cream make no doubt about it, and perhaps there is something special about making it the french pot way that avoid that kind of result, but most of it will be enjoyed by kids and adults of all ages and sizes and tastebuds.

Well I have not had the fortune to try french pot ice cream yet, but when they do bring it to my neck of the woods, I will make a beeline for it. If Oprah Winfrey and Richard Graeter can work something out and bring french pot ice cream to my town, I will definitely help promote it because I am a sucker for ice cold dessert, creamy and delicious. The age old favorite of chocolate chip will definitely tickle my tastebuds, and I cannot wait to try out their Black Raspberry Chocolate chip french pot ice cream flavor one of these days. How anyone can live without it is simply beyond me.

Bunge Limited and Corn Products International, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement in which Bunge will acquire Corn Products in an all-stock transaction. The aggregate transaction value is approximately $4.8 billion, including assumption of approximately $414 million of Corn Products’ net debt.

Under the terms of the agreement, approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies, Corn Products stockholders will receive common shares of Bunge with a market value of $56.00 for each share of Corn Products common stock that they own, subject to adjustment as described below. Following the closing of the transaction, Corn Products stockholders will own approximately 21% of Bunge’s fully diluted shares.

Emphysema
Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lung that primarily causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the lung tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lung are destroyed. It is included in a group of diseases called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD (pulmonary refers to the lungs). Emphysema is called an obstructive lung disease because the destruction of lung tissue around smaller airways, called bronchioles, makes these airways unable to hold their shape properly when you exhale.

This group of diseases ranks as the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Unlike heart disease and other more common causes of death, the death rate for COPD appears to be rising.

Emphysema changes the anatomy of the lung in several important ways.

Normally, the lungs are very spongy and elastic. When a breath is taken, the chest wall expands, expanding the sponge. Similar to the way a squeezed sponge will draw water into it when released, suction draws air into the lungs when the chest wall expands. Air is brought though the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (the main air tubes going to right and left lungs). These tubes divide into smaller and smaller tubes, finally ending in alveoli. Alveoli, the tiniest structures in the lung, are very small air sacs that are arranged like a bunch of grapes. The alveoli are at the ends of the smallest tubes called bronchioles. The alveoli and the bronchioles are very important structures for the lungs to function properly. It is these structures that are destroyed by emphysema.
A sponge works to pick up water because all of the tiny little holes expand all at once after being squeezed. If the holes were larger, the sponge would not pick up as much water. This is because a larger hole cannot expand enough by itself to equal the action of multiple smaller ones. Thinking of the lungs as a sponge in this way, it becomes easier to see how emphysema acts to cause impaired lung function. Lungs require an elastic quality, so that they can expand and contract well. Additionally similar to the holes of the sponge, lungs need many alveoli (hundreds of millions, in fact) to draw enough air into them. The fewer and the bigger the alveoli, the less effectively they perform.

The Baseball Project

The Baseball Project
Baseball is unique among professional sports in that statistics dominate the evaluation of its participants. It is a practical approach, given the nature of the contest (pitcher vs. batter, essentially), and the large number of games played over the course of a season. These statistics are easily accessible, and are used not only by baseball officials, but by analysts, writers, and fans to draw their own conclusions about how a player has performed in the past and how he will fare in the future. It is this unique kinship of data and sport, coupled with a love for the game, that prompted me to create the Baseball Project.

I do not pretend to be a "stat geek", and the glorification of these statistics is not my goal. Instead, I'm fascinated with how this relatively simple game (throw the ball, hit the ball, catch the ball) generates so much data, and how this data can be used in a myriad of ways. In addition, I think the contrast of sport and math makes for good artistic fodder.

I've considered myself a fan of baseball much longer than I've considered myself an artist, so the "fan experience" is an element of these drawings that I wanted to make apparent. The labor intensive aspect of the Grid drawings, and the game-by-game tracking is mean to invoke the scrutiny that obsessive fans give to the daily performance of their team

Think of Anchorage, pictured above, as Long Beach, ringed by mountains. OK, a slightly more rustic, but still water-based distant cousin of Long Beach. You know immediately that it’s a little different up here the moment you leave the airport and pass a fleet of bush planes on the edge of a lagoon.

Talk about your endless summers. Daylight lasts 19 hours here now, and Anchorage is poised to celebrate Saturday’s summer solstice with a massive street fest and marathon that has filled nearly every hotel room in town. The Summer Solstice Festival begins Friday with 10 musical groups and a dozen more on Saturday. A marathon and half-marathon are also scheduled Saturday, under almost ideal conditions. Highs Friday and Saturday are expected to be in the upper 60s, under patchy clouds, with only a slight chance of a moose attack.

As locals are quick to remind you, moose are known to wander right into the center of this town of nearly 300,000 residents, set right on the edge of the wilderness. Bear sightings are also common, and the residents say they have been active this spring.

In any case, summer is about to start with a flourish here in the 49th state. And what a place to hold a party. Sunset tonight? 11:45 p.m.

The summer solstice occurs at 7:59 p.m local time today. There is confusion with some calendars; many say "summer begins" today, others say it begins Saturday. Technically, both are correct! It really depends on what part of the world you are in at the time of the solstice. In many parts of the world, it will be Saturday when the solstice occurs; however, in North America it will still be Friday.

This is the time that we see the "most direct" rays of the sunshine. As we move through the summer season, the sun angle will decrease, and the days will become shorter.

On Friday, June 20, the summer of 2008 will begin in earnest across the Northern Hemisphere, with the longest day of the year.

Before the sun sets on the June solstice, get the facts on why it occurs and how people throughout history have celebrated the event.

Celestial Science

—The word solstice's Latin roots mean "sun stands still," an apt description of how the astronomical event appears from Earth.

Since ancient times people have followed the movement of the sun as it rises, crosses the sky, and sets along a path that changes incrementally throughout the year.

For a few days surrounding the solstice, however, our star seems to rise and set at the same locations. It also hovers at the same noontime spot, pausing before its trajectory begins its incremental shift until year's end—the December solstice.

—The "summer solstice" should be called the "June solstice," because it is actually the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Despite the reversed seasons, the event has long been observed south of the Equator as well.

—Winter and summer occur largely because the planet is tilted on an axis running through the poles at an angle of 23.5 degrees. As the planet orbits the sun, each hemisphere receives varying amounts of light and warmth determined by the direction in which it is tilted: summer when tilted towards the sun and winter when tilted away.

On June 20, 2008, the North Pole will tilt most directly toward the sun, so that the noon sun appears at its highest point in the sky—nearly directly overhead. This is the year's longest day in terms of daylight hours.
At the same time, in the Southern Hemisphere, the pole is tilted farthest away from the sun, and the June solstice falls in winter, marking the shortest and darkest day of the year.

Solstice Moon Illusion
Sometimes you just can't believe your eyes. This week is one of those times. On Wednesday night, June 18th, step outside at sunset and look around. You'll see a giant form rising in the east. At first glance it looks like the full Moon. It has craters and seas and the face of a man, but this "moon" is strangely inflated. It's huge!

You've just experienced the Moon Illusion.

There's no better time to see it. The full Moon of June 18th is a "solstice moon", coming only two days before the beginning of northern summer. This is significant because the sun and full Moon are like kids on a see-saw; when one is high, the other is low. This week's high solstice sun gives us a low, horizon-hugging Moon and a strong Moon Illusion.

Sky watchers have known for thousands of years that low-hanging moons look unnaturally big. At first, astronomers thought the atmosphere must be magnifying the Moon near the horizon, but cameras showed that is not the case. Moons on film are the same size regardless of elevation: example. Apparently, only human beings see giant moons.

Are we crazy?

After all these years, scientists still aren't sure. When you look at the Moon, rays of moonlight converge and form an image about 0.15 mm wide on the retina in the back of your eye. High moons and low moons make the same sized spot, yet the brain insists one is bigger than the other. Go figure.

A similar illusion was discovered in 1913 by Mario Ponzo, who drew two identical bars across a pair of converging lines, like the railroad tracks pictured right. The upper yellow bar looks wider because it spans a greater apparent distance between the rails. This is the "Ponzo Illusion."

Some researchers believe that the Moon Illusion is Ponzo's Illusion, with trees and houses playing the role of Ponzo's converging lines. Foreground objects trick your brain into thinking the Moon is bigger than it really is.

But there's a problem: Airline pilots flying at very high altitudes sometimes experience the Moon Illusion without any objects in the foreground. What tricks their eyes?

Maybe it's the shape of the sky. Humans perceive the sky as a flattened dome, with the zenith nearby and the horizon far away. It makes sense; birds flying overhead are closer than birds on the horizon. When the moon is near the horizon, your brain, trained by watching birds (and clouds and airplanes), miscalculates the Moon's true distance and size.

There are other explanations, too. It doesn't matter which is correct, though, if all you want to do is see a big beautiful Moon. The best time to look is around moonrise, when the Moon is peeking through trees and houses or over mountain ridges. The table below (scroll down) lists rise times for selected US cities.

A fun activity: Look at the Moon directly and then through a narrow opening of some kind. For example, 'pinch' the moon between your thumb and forefinger or view it through a cardboard tube, which hides the foreground terrain. Can you make the optical illusion vanish?

'Big Breakfast' Diet Helps Shed Pounds
Eating a 600-calorie breakfast rich in carbohydrates and protein helps dieters lose more weight long term than eating a modest breakfast and following a lower-carb eating plan, according to a new study.

Breakfast and weight loss have long been linked, but the new research zeroes in on how to help dieters stick with a plan and not regain the lost weight by adjusting the amount of carbohydrates, protein, and calories eaten early in the day.

"Those on the 'big breakfast diet' feel less hungry before lunch and all day," says Daniela Jakubowicz, MD, an endocrinologist in Caracas, Venezuela, and a clinical professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, who led the study. She is presenting her findings this week at ENDO 08, the 90th annual meeting of The Endocrine Society in San Francisco.

Breakfast and Weight Loss
With colleagues from Virginia Commonwealth University, Jakubowicz assigned 94 obese, physically inactive women, on average in their 30s, to two groups:

The low-carb diet group of 46 women was instructed to eat a small breakfast totaling about 290 calories that was low in carbohydrates and typically didn't include bread. A sample breakfast might have included a cup of milk, one egg, three slices of bacon, and two teaspoons of butter. When they visited the study center, these women ate breakfast there and their food was monitored. They ate an average of 1,085 calories a day.
The big-breakfast group of 48 women was told to eat a breakfast of about 610 calories. A sample breakfast: a cup of milk, turkey, cheese, two slices of bread, mayonnaise, 1 ounce of chocolate candy, and a protein shake. They could eat the breakfast in stages from the time they got up until 9 a.m. This group averaged 1,240 calories a day.
Both groups stayed on the diet for four months to lose weight, and then shifted to maintenance mode for the last four months.

At the four-month mark, the dieters eating the modest breakfast dropped about 28 pounds, while those on the big breakfast plan lost 23 pounds.

The real differences showed up at the eight-month mark, when the low-carb dieters had regained an average of 18 pounds and the big-breakfast eaters continued to lose, dropping another 16.5 pounds on average.

In all, members of the big-breakfast group lost more than 21% of their body weight; low-carb group members lost 4.5%.

A bonus, says Jakubowicz, is that the big-breakfast dieters reported less hunger and fewer cravings for carbohydrates than the other group.

Some of the study findings make perfect sense and are well known to nutrition experts, says Joan Salge Blake, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association and a professor of nutrition at Boston University, who reviewed the study for WebMD.

Woods forces U.S. Open playoff
Tiger Woods wasn't sure if his left knee would allow him to finish 72 holes of the U.S. Open. After yet another defining moment at Torrey Pines, he was thrilled to get a chance at 18 more.

Down to his last stroke, Woods holed a 12-foot birdie putt that curled into the right side of the cup on the 18th hole to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate, who could only watch on TV as Woods delivered another epic moment in an Open loaded with them.

Mediate, trying to become the oldest champion at age 45, two-putted for par from above the ridge for an even-par 71 to finish at 1-under 283, the first time since 2004 that someone broke par in a U.S. Open.

It looked like it might be good enough when Woods and Lee Westwood of England, both one shot behind, hit into the bunker on each side of the fairway on the 527-yard closing hole and had to lay up.

Westwood's 15-foot birdie putt never had a chance, losing speed and turning away. He shot 73.

From an unpredictable lie in the right rough, Woods gouged a wedge out to 12 feet right of the pin. He started to backpedal as the putt neared the hole, paused to make sure it was in, then clenched and pumped both fists toward him with his head to the sky.

"Unbelievable. I knew he'd make it," Mediate said as he watched from a scoring room.

Woods shot 73 and will be in a playoff for the third time in a major, this one 18 holes of stroke play on Monday.

The 50,000 fans at Torrey Pines, who thought they had seen it all during a most remarkable week, now get a little bit more.

It will be the first playoff at the U.S. Open — the only major that goes 18 holes of overtime — since Retief Goosen defeated Mark Brooks at Southern Hills in 2001.

And it was made possible by Woods, among the greatest clutch putters of all time, making a putt that simply couldn't miss.

"A little wobbly down there," he said of the poa greens, a grass that gets bumpier in the afternoon sun. "I played probably 2½ holes outside right. Just take it back and make a pure stroke, because once it starts slowing down there ... you don't know what's going to happen. All I could control is my stroke."

The birdie concluded a week in which Woods played the first two rounds with Phil Mickelson, shot 30 on his back nine Friday to get into contention, took the 54-hole lead Saturday with two eagle putts totaling 100 feet, and wobbled on a surgically repaired knee that often turned a megawatt smile into a painful grimace.

The knee, which sidelined him from the Masters until this week, didn't seem to bother him as much Sunday — certainly not when he launched into the wildest celebration of the week.

"I took some things to kind of relieve that," Woods said of the soreness.

Adrenaline maybe?

"Uh, that helps, too," he said.

Mediate made only one bogey over the final 13 holes, seizing on his best — and perhaps only — chance to win a major. He grazed the edge of the cup on a 15-foot birdie try at the 17th and hit a wedge too strong on the 18th, both pars keeping Woods in the game.

Monday will not be the first time they have tussled.

Mediate played with a 23-year-old Woods in the final round of the Phoenix Open in 1999, where he led by six shots and held on to win by three. It was one of his five PGA Tour victories.

"Battle royale," Mediate said of what awaits. "The thing that is most amazing is the man I'm going to play tomorrow has won 13 of these. It's amazing how much it takes. I gave all I had today and I can't complain."

Woods has never lost a major when he had at least a share of the 54-hole lead, and he came close to throwing this one away on a series of questionable decisions and poor shots.

He tried to reach the 13th green in two from 291 yards when a birdie was not necessary, then pulled it into a hazard and walked off with bogey to slip one shot behind Mediate, who had birdied the 14th ahead of him.

Woods then laid up with an iron on the 14th, where the tees were moved up to make it play only 267 yards, hit a sand wedge 20 feet beyond the hole and made par. And two shots into the right rough on the 15th led to a bogey that put him one shot behind.

Standing over an all-or-nothing putt on the last hole, Woods again delivered.

It was reminiscent of the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he made a six-foot birdie putt that broke both ways to get into a playoff against Bob May, the critical piece on his way to four straight majors.

"It feels very similar to what Valhalla felt like," Woods said. "If I didn't make that putt, I don't get to continue to keep playing. At best, I gave myself a chance to win the tournament tomorrow. And that's all I can ask for."

Westwood, trying to become the first European in 38 years to win the U.S. Open, fell one stroke short. He had a one-shot lead at the turn and fought to stay in the game after consecutive bogeys early on the back nine.

"It's sickening not to be in the playoff tomorrow," he said. "But all in all, I played pretty good all week. And if somebody said, 'You're going to have a chance for a playoff on Monday,' then I would have probably taken that at the start of the week. I think I've proved to myself and a few others that I think there is a major championship in me."

Woods even being in contention on the back looked uncertain the way he started.

In the final group for the sixth time in the last eight majors, this one was packed with curiosity over the state of his knee, and it showed. Fans stood 25 rows deep behind the tee, and those in the top row of the bleachers on the 18th hole turned to watch. Among those in the crowd was his swing coach, Hank Haney, who pleaded as Woods settled over the tee shot, "C'mon, buddy."

He snap-hooked the tee shot over the gallery, and so began another journey to double bogey — his second shot was left and hit a tree, his third shot clipped another tree and stayed in thick rough, his fourth didn't reach the green, and he got up-and-down for a 6.

That put him 7-over for the week on his opening hole, and was his third double bogey on No. 1.

After a three-putt bogey — his fourth of the week — on No. 2, he didn't make another mistake until the 13th.

Woods won that three-hole playoff at Valhalla by one shot, and he won the 2005 Masters in a sudden-death playoff with an 8-iron into 15 feet on the first extra hole to beat Chris DiMarco.

This one is a full round on a wounded knee against a 45-year-old with a back so creaky he once contemplated retirement. Now, Mediate feels as though he has nothing to lose.

"I don't know how you make odds on that," Mediate said. "Who knew I would be here playing against him tomorrow?"

Then he noticed Woods standing at the door of the interview room.

"And you better watch yourself tomorrow, pal," Mediate said playfully. "See, he's a little nervous right now."

Woods joined the laughter. Nervous? Probably not. But definitely thrilled to still be playing.
