Cold Temperatures And Global Warming

Cold Temperatures And Global Warming

On the brink of March there are still bitter cold temperatures on Delmarva. So what does that tell us about global warming?

One thing we know, the United States is experiencing its third worst winter in a decade. And many American cities suffered record cold temperatures in January and February. As recently as this past summer there was concern over the melting of Arctic sea ice. But the experts say that the ice is now thicker than it was this time last year.

Mighty Lake Michigan could suffer from global warming

Mighty Lake Michigan could suffer from global warming

As a source for Chicago’s drinking water, Lake Michigan has enjoyed a stable water level that has fluctuated no more than six feet since Great Lakes record keeping began in the mid-1800s.

But scientists who study the lake, the world's fifth largest with l,300 cubic miles of water, warn that global warning of 3 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit could reduce water levels and disrupt the lake's ecological balance.

“You could leave Navy Pier high and dry,” said Raymond Pierrehumbert, professor of geophysics at the University of Chicago, referring the city’s shallow coastline.

Long-term lake forecasts are speculative at best, but a range of experts and environmental groups agree higher temperatures would speed the evaporative effect and accelerate an already alarming drop in lake levels.

The US Army Corps of Engineers reported Lake Michigan levels at 576.7 feet on Tuesday, just six inches higher than its record low set in 1964.

“If the Great Lakes are facing warmer temperatures, you’re looking at more days of warmth and less days of ice cover,” said Frances Canonizado, outreach coordinator at the Chicago-based Alliance for the Great Lakes. “Ice sort of acts like a lid on the lakes, so there is the concern of increased loss of Great Lakes water.”

It’s a big concern to Chicagoans, who use about one billion gallons of purified lake water each day, sucked in through a series of intake cribs located miles off the Lake Michigan shore. A network of environmental groups including the Alliance is campaigning to get governors from Great Lakes states and Canadian provinces to sign a compact agreeing not to export Great Lakes water to drought-prone regions in the southwest.

Commercial shippers, hydroelectric companies and recreational boater may wonder how a drop in lake levels would affect Chicago’s coastline.

“Our concern is that it will impact places like harbors and docks, where boats are housed during the winter season, but especially for commercial purposes,” Canonizado said. “There is a certain level of depth you have to have for a boat to safely navigate the waters.”

But climate change could affect more than the water supply. Warmer water temperatures prevent the lake from cycling oxygen to its lower depths, creating deoxygenated “dead zones” that are harmful to fish and conducive to harmful pollutants.

At the end of each winter freeze, cold water from the lake surface naturally falls to the bottom, replenishing oxygen-dependent aquatic life near the lake bed. A lack of oxygen invites species that thrive in non-oxygen environments such as sludge worms and carp, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A 2006 report from the Washington D.C.-based Climate Institute backs up local concerns, predicting lower lake and river levels in the Great Lakes region, as well as a trend in fish population away from trout and towards bass and catfish. The Great Lakes Regional Assessment, which is funded in part by the U.S. EPA and conducted by scientists at Michigan State University, warns too that warmer temperatures and oxygen levels could lead to a 20 percent reduction in biological -productivity.

“Less circulation means oxygen depletion, which has very bad consequences both for the life in the lake but also in terms of pollution,” Pierrehumbert said.

Mercury and PCB’s from nearby coal-fired power plants lie mostly dormant in sediments on the bottom of the lake, but in the absence of oxygen these and other chemicals are more readily taken up by water, Pierrehumbert said.

“Mercury in the sediments is going to be there for a long, long time. Right now it’s kind of immobile in the sediments, but if it goes anoxic there’s the risk that some of that may become mobilized.”

Bacteria in water can turn mercury into a more harmful component known as methylmercury, which bio-accumulates in the fish population. Children and women of child-bearing age are advised not to consume fish from water with high mercury content.

Alaska Town Files Lawsuit Over Global Warming

This week a small Alaska village has filed a lawsuit against a dozen oil, power, and coal companies alleging that the large amounts of greenhouse gases emitted by the companies contributed to global warming that threatens the community's existence. The town of Kivalina, the home of a federally recognized tribe, has filed the lawsuit in the federal court of San Francisco. Kivalina is located about 625 miles northwest of Anchorage and is called home by 390 Alaska natives. The village is built on a barrier reef between the Chukchi Sea and Kivalina River. In the past the town has been protected from winter storms by sea ice that formed a barrier sheltering the community from waves and surges that batter coastal community in autumn and winter. In recent years sea ice has been forming later and melting soon exposing the village to the full power of winter storms. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants are responsible for this due to their contribution to global warming.

CA upgrades Recovery Management

CA upgrades Recovery Management

February 26, 2008—CA recently released new versions of three products in its Recovery Management portfolio, including ARCserve Backup, XOsoft High Availability, and XOsoft Replication, offering customers and channel partners centralized management, security, and faster data recovery.

ARCserve Backup r12 features a range of new tools for simplified backup administration, disk-based backup optimization, and encryption. The upgrades include a centralized management console; support for VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB); options for encrypting data at the client, media server, or tape drives; and support for policy-based disk-to-disk-to-tape backup.

CA has also enhanced its XOsoft product line to improve the continuous data protection (CDP), disaster-recovery (DR) testing, and overall management of its business continuity and DR products.

Lauren Whitehouse, an analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group, says both ARCserve and XOsoft are solid offerings independent of each other, but combined they pack a strong one-two punch in terms of data recovery.

"Disk-based backup provides operational recovery with very good RTO [recovery time objective] capabilities. CA XOsoft, with its CDP capabilities, provides operational recovery supporting aggressive RPO [recovery point objective] capabilities, and with its replication capabilities provides disaster recovery," says Whitehouse. "Because CA has a broad set of offerings, end users can tailor their data-protection strategy to meet RTO and RPO requirements by creating layers of protection or selecting the technology best-suited for the system or application."

Individually, backup, high availability, and replication are crowded spaces for vendors targeting the mid-market. According to Whitehouse, many vendors play in the backup space, while others have CDP offerings. However, she says, few vendors offer all of these technologies as a combined solution.

Whitehouse explains: "If you look at the vendors that have a combined offering, such as CA, the landscape is sparse. CommVault's Simpana offers backup and CDP; BakBone offers backup, replication, and CDP; and Avamar and Microsoft provide backup with replication capabilities between one storage system and another for disaster-recovery purposes."

CA has been investing in integration over the past 18 months since its acquisition of XOsoft. Much of that investment has been used to combine XOsoft's WANsync, WANSync HA, and Enterprise Rewinder technologies with ARCserve—resulting in improved replication, data distribution, and data consolidation, as well as high-availability fail-over and CDP.

However, the most significant improvement to ARCserve Backup r12 may be its enhanced management capabilities.

"The biggest new feature for ARCserve is its centralized management capability, which allows for the management of both local and remote backups from a single console," says Frank Jablonski, director of product marketing at CA.

Prior to ARCserve r12, each backup server required independent management. Jablonski says that automating and centralizing management allows for greater control and efficiency in the backup process.

"The central management feature was enabled by switching ARCserve's underlying database from RAIMA to SQL Express," ESG's Whitehouse explains. "The new database also helped them improve performance and scalability. Now all information is stored centrally and they're providing auto-migration for customers that upgrade from previous versions."

CA recently altered its pricing scheme for ARCserve Backup to streamline the purchasing process. The new scheme also eliminates some of the costs previously associated with buying additional options and software agents when new hardware components are added to a customer's storage environment, and the company is sticking to this pricing model with the new ARCserve and XOsoft products.

CA ARCserve File Server Suite now costs $995, while the ARCserve Backup e-Mail Suite, Database Suite, and Application Suites each costs $1,495. Each suite contains all necessary options and agents, but the stated prices do not include maintenance.

For XOsoft High Availability and XOsoft Replication, pricing starts at $2,000 per server and requires a minimum of two servers to support replication.

Maruti Swift Sedan (Dzire)

Maruti Swift Sedan (Dzire)

Maruti has been keeping the all new three-box based on the hatchback Swift well under wraps. So much so, that there was no mention or glimpse of it in the Auto Expo. As this gimmick fired our curiosity, we set our hounds free to sniff out a Dzire somewhere and lead us to it. And what we got to know was this.

Maruti seems inspired by the FMCG tradition and has put on offer a product for the difference of every lakh. This is an effort to retain its huge customer base. The new sedan is going to be an offering between Swift and SX4 and will be offered in 6 variants, LXi, VXi and ZXi in petrol and LDi, VDi and ZDi in diesel. The 1.3L multijet engine used in the Swift is something which will be put to use here too. Going to be released in mid-March, the car will be priced between 5 to 7 lakhs.

The sedan is a replica of the hatchback with a boot attached along. And as some spy shots do the rounds of internet, the reactions to the car are mixed. Some think it is amazingly boyish, upbeat and young-looking and others think that Maruti is making a big mistake by phasing Esteem out and bringing in this sedan. SOME are also promising that when the car actually comes out, it is going to take peoples’ breath away and that it resembles Toyota’s Camry from the rear end.

The Raman Effect

She is considered to be one of the most talented and genre-defying musicians of modern times. Her work as singer, composer and arranger have brought her great acclaim as a recording artist and a live performer. But most of us will remember her from the seductive rendition of the Mukesh classic Yeh mera deewanapan hai in Mira Nair’s Namesake. And Kolkata will sway to her soulful numbers this Friday when Susheela Raman and her group perform with Sam Mills for the annual Congosquare Jazzfest at the Dalhousie Institute. “Susheela Raman, along with a galaxy of Jazz heavyweights will perform for us this year,” says Tapan Desai, vice president, Congo Square.
The jazz fest, which is now a regular event in the city’s social calendar, brings musicians from across the world to Kolkata. “Rarely do we get to witnesses performances of greats like Catherine Porter, who has solid reputation as an inspired performer of North Indian classical music, and Mynta a multicultural band which blends Indian, African, Latin-American, Arabic, Swedish, and Norwegian music. And of course the celebrated talent, Sam Mills,” claims Desai.

The three day festival will also see the performances of Matthias-Tillman Quartet, Brian Melvin with Amit Heri Group and This Is Not Fusion with guest Brian Melvin- familiar names for most Jazz enthusiasts.

New York Philharmonic Performs in North Korea

New York Philharmonic Performs in North Korea
Associated Press
February 26, 2008 6:11 a.m.

PYONGYANG, North Korea -- The New York Philharmonic gave a historic concert in North Korea, becoming the first major American cultural group to perform in the country and the largest-ever delegation from the U.S. to visit.

Evan Ramstad
The Philharmonic holds a dress rehearsal.
The Philharmonic began the performance with "Patriotic Song" -- North Korea's national anthem -- and continued with "The Star-Spangled Banner." The audience gave both renditions standing ovations.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il didn't appear to be in attendance at the 2,500-seat East Pyongyang Grand Theater.

Ahead of the performance in the isolated North, music director Lorin Maazel said the orchestra has been a force for change in the past, noting that its 1959 performance in the Soviet Union was part of that country's opening up to the outside world that eventually resulted in the downfall of the regime.

"The Soviets didn't realize that it was a two-edged sword, because by doing so they allowed people from outside the country to interact with their own people, and to have an influence," he told journalists in Pyongyang. "It was so long lasting that eventually the people in power found themselves out of power." When asked if he thought the same could happen in North Korea, he said: "There are no parallels in history; there are similarities." While the Soviets were viewed as a threatening superpower, Mr. Maazel said the Korean peninsula has a different role in the world because of its small size.

• Players' Perspective: Recalling Historic Trips
• The Philharmonic's Quiet Contessa
• New Sounds for North Korea"To draw a parallel would be to do a disservice to the people who live here and who are trying through their art and through their culture to reach out to other human beings, to make a better world for themselves and for all of us," he said.

Still, he said the concert could be a very small step that would hopefully spark other cultural and social exchanges.

"We are very humble. We are here to make music," he said.

The U.S. and North Korean flags were displayed at opposite ends of the stage.

Following the brief prelude to Act 3 of Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin," the orchestra was moving on to pieces that highlighted the ensemble's importance in American music.

That included two pieces that premiered with the Philharmonic: Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 -- popularly known as the "New World Symphony," written while the Czech composer lived in the U.S. and was inspired by native American themes -- and George Gershwin's "An American in Paris."

Evan Ramstad

On the streets of Pyongyang earlier Tuesday, North Koreans said they were aware of the orchestra's visit. But the trip wasn't yet front-page news: A picture of the orchestra's airport arrival to the North Korean capital was printed inside the main Rodong Sinmun newspaper, along with brief stories on the event.

At the Grand People's Study House, the country's largest library said to include 30 million volumes, journalists saw North Koreans looking up information in an electronic catalog, reading industrial journals and attending language and science classes.

In one boisterous classroom, teacher Jeon Hyun Mi led students through an English lesson using materials from "Family Album U.S.A.," an American-designed program based on the life of a fictional family. As she questioned them about details of the characters, students enthusiastically shouted out "yes" or "no" and brief replies. The teacher said she welcomed the orchestra's visit as a way to bring the people of the two countries together, implying it was only the governments that harbored differences. "We think we have good relations, people are very close," Ms. Jeon said. The trip "is a gesture of improvement" in ties between the U.S. and the North.

Kim Kwang Chol, a 24-year-old computer technician, was searching the library's catalog for a photo of the peninsula's tallest peak, Mount Paektu, that he said he would use in a multimedia presentation. "I think it is a very good phenomenon that the New York Philharmonic is coming," he said. "I think that this visit will help relations between the United States and North Korea improve."

"This chance will be a good signal for [the North] and the United States," said Kim Seon Hwa, a 25-year-old watching a Chinese instructional CD video on flower arranging. "We Korean people like cultural exchanges."

Ri Myong Sop, an electrical engineering student walking on the city's streets outside a subway station, repeated the country's official line that the U.S. started the Korean War, which ended in a 1953 cease-fire that has never been replaced with a peace treaty. "At present, if the United States takes the decision of a more encouraging policy toward the North then we can embrace the United States," he said.

The U.S. government has supported the Philharmonic's visit, agreed upon last year when efforts to end the North's nuclear weapons program were making unprecedented progress. The country shut down its main nuclear reactor in July and has started disabling it so it cannot easily be restarted under the eyes of U.S. and international experts.

However, disarmament has stalled this year because of what Washington says is North Korea's failure to give a full declaration of its atomic programs to be dismantled, as Pyongyang promised to do under an international agreement.

A Raisin in the Sun Producer Craig Zadan on the Movie's Gay Subtext Karen Ocamb

A Raisin in the Sun Producer Craig Zadan on the Movie's Gay Subtext Karen Ocamb

Let's be honest: most people will probably tune into ABC's drama A Raisin in the Sun tonight to see if Sean "P-Diddy" Combs can act. He can. In fact, the entire cast is achingly brilliant. See the excellent New York Times review here.

And with the 40th anniversaries of the assassinations of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy coming up - and the new "I have a dream" candidate Barack Obama trying to turn a political campaign into a movement for social change, many might think that the dream deferred -- the "raisin" of the title from black gay poet Langston Hughes' poem "Harlem" ("What happens to a dream deferred?/Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun?") -- is outdated.

It's not. Racism is still rampant, the film's gay co-producer Craig Zadan points out. So is homophobia and the closet -- one of the subtexts of the original play written by African American lesbian Lorraine Hansberry.

Lorraine Hansbery "is one of the most famous lesbian playwrights who nobody knew was a lesbian," Zadan told me by phone as he drove to a press conference with Combs at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Of course, Hansberry is now famous among African American LGBT people. But in her time -- especially in 1959 when Raisin in the Sun became the first play written by a black woman to be produced on Broadway -- Hansberry qualified as the kind of woman artist Virginia Woolf talked about in her famous 1928 Cambridge lecture, "Shakespeare's sister."

All these elements -- racism, sexism, and homophobia -- occurred to Zadan and his producing partner Neil Meron (also openly gay) at Storyline Entertainment when they saw the revival of A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway with the same cast that's in the ABC movie. The producing partners have a long history of consciously using diversity in theme and casting.

Zadan explained the process by which they brought the play to television and Hansberry's gay subtext.

Neil and I have been drawn to movies that fall into three distinct groups: One is musicals, which we took upon ourselves to try to bring back when nobody was doing musicals; the second is bio-pics. When no one was doing bio-pics, we on TV, we did Judy Garland, the Beach Boys, the Reagans -- a whole lot of biographical things; and the third -- social and political films like Serving in Silence, What Makes a Family, and Wedding Wars, which are gay and lesbian stories. We're always developing more, looking for more social/political stories.

We went to see the revival when it opened a couple of years ago and we were just blown away by it. We realized that Sean Combs made it feel contemporary. The audience was compromised of the youngest people we've ever seen at a play. The place was packed with Caucasians and African Americans -- but kids and families. We'd never seen an audience like that ever on Broadway for a straight dramatic play. And they went nuts. They went to see it -- maybe -- because of Diddy -- but they came away having had that experience of this piece with that cast. And we were determined at that point that we wanted to turn it into a movie.

Luckily our deal is at Sony and luckily Sony [Columbia Pictures} made the original Raisin in the Sun with Sidney Poitier. So we lucked out. We went to them and everybody embraced it. And then we went to Steve McPherson [president of ABC Entertainment] and we didn't even get the words out of our mouth and he jumped up and said, 'Go make it now.' He immediately understood how important the story was and with that cast. He said, 'You get that cast -- go make the picture.

Unfortunately it took us two years because those actors -- Audra McDonald, Phylicia Rashad, Sanaa Lathan, Sean Combs -- are so busy with plays and movies and concert tours. It took us two years to coordinate schedules.

Finally, last year they all said to us, 'OK, we have between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve -- so we'll give you that.' We were freaking out because we were still shooting Hairspray, we were about to start shooting The Bucket List -- so we said, 'You know what -- it's really hard to pull this off right now. But we're not even going to think about it. We're just going to pull it off.

So we immediately set up production -- in many cases working seven days a week -- because we had to finish in that tiny, tiny window.

We made it happen in Toronto because we were finishing Hairspray In Toronto and we couldn't leave the city.

We finished the movie and then Neil and I edited it very quickly. But ABC said, 'You know what -- this is too important. We can't throw this on the air. Work with us -- be patient and let's give it a coveted time slot.'

And everybody was like, 'We want to put it on now.' They said, 'No -- trust us.' We said, 'OK.' They basically said, 'We think we should hold it until next year and put it on the night after the Oscars so we can promote it during the Academy Awards,' which is of course the largest audience watching ABC all year. So we used last night as a platform and we're on tonight.

But Neil and I -- when we saw it we said, 'This is very, very important. The truth of the matter is -- when we look at things -- every movie we do -- no matter what the subject matter is -- we go to the universal theme of family. We always go to that because if the movie is about family, then any audience can relate to it. We feel that this one -- more than just about any of them -- is about what happens to a family falling apart and disintegrating and pulling itself back together again.

We felt it was a very important African American story, a very important story about racism. Some people said, 'Oh -- this is 1959.' And we said, "Yes -- but what about Michael Richards [profusely using the "n-word" during a stand up routine at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles} and Don Imus [who got briefly kicked off the air for calling the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team "napped headed hos"] and what about Jena -- that town where they hung nooses? So everything going on around us was all about blatant racism.

And then on top of all that -- out of the blue -- came Barack Obama, which we didn't anticipate. So we felt there was this amazing story that needed to be told today because racism is rampant in America and needs to be dealt with -- and dealt with not standing on a soapbox preaching but by moving people to tears and breaking their hearts - that's how you reach people.

But that jumps off to another point: whenever you deal with an issue of minorities, you also deal with gays and lesbians -- and especially here with a play by an African American lesbian playwright -- it became very, very important to us to tell this story.

We think there are some subliminal things going on that if you watch the movie. You get into these people's lives and you are as moved as we were by their story and by the actors. We think people will get it since it deals with minorities, it deals with race, it deals with prejudice, it deals with everything in the world today.

What I found particularly interesting was that beyond racism are other prejudices. You have everybody trying to hush up about the fact that [Hansberry] was a lesbian playwright. I think part of it comes from the fact that she had a heterosexual marriage. I'm sure it was a loving relationship and I'm sure they cared about each other a great deal. But the point is -- when that marriage came to an end, we found out where her heart was.

{Hansberry] wrote a lot of lesbian political stories in different publications and at that time signed it "LH." So she was willing to write constantly about the gay and lesbian cause but at the same time, she was never willing to sign her real name to it. Talk about the closet - I think that's amazing.

It is very, very important that people understand that you can tell different kinds of stories and they do related to gay and lesbian issues -- especially when you know the people behind them.

Lorraine Hansberry was clearly writing from the gay experience. The character that Senaa Lathem plays is the Lorraine Hansberry character. She represents Lorraine. If you look at the ideas and you look at what she had to say and how outspoken she is and how she's breaking traditions and breaking rules and being rebellious and experimenting -- you can look at that very clearly as her exploring her lesbianism, from a political point of view. Even though she's talking about other things, beneath the surface you can see what she's really talking about. So I think if you watch the movie and you know that Senaa Lathem is playing Lorraine Hansberry's character, expressing Lorraine's point of view -- you then start to see the ramifications of the gay and lesbian experience screaming to come to out.

She was so prescient that she was telling us about the Women's Liberation Movement, the gay and lesbian movement and the civil rights movement -- before these movements happened. She was a young girl. How could somebody 27 years old have the insight to understand -- it's one thing if she wrote a trilogy or if she wrote 10 plays -- but in one play to express all of those issues and values? It's astonishing.

And we're so use to writing where every so often there is a great line. Not in this - almost every line counts. And if you understand the subtext of what she's really saying, you realize how political and powerful her message is. So any gay or lesbian viewer would get so much out of it and understand how deeply and how powerful and how emotional and how ahead of her time she was; it took a lesbian to tell the world that the world was changing.

A Raisin in the Sun airs tonight on ABC from 8:00pm to 11:00pm Eastern.

1. Expand your brain -Widen the brain regions involved in learning by reading aloud, drawing a picture, or writing down the information you want to learn (even if you never look back at your notes). Just forming a visual image of something makes it easier to remember and understand; it forces you to make the information more precise.

2. Believe in yourself - Myths about aging can contribute to a failing memory. Middle-aged and older learners do worse on memory tasks when exposed to negative stereotypes about aging and memory, and better if exposed to messages about memory preservation into old age.

3. Economize your brain use - Take advantage of calendars and planners, maps, shopping lists, file folders, and address books to keep routine information accessible. Designate a place at home for your glasses, keys, and other items you use frequently.

4. Organize your thoughts - New information that’s broken into smaller chunks, such as the hyphenated sections of a phone or social security number, is easier to remember than a single long list, such as financial account numbers or the name of everyone in a classroom.

5. Use all your senses - The more senses you use when you learn something, the more of your brain will be involved in retaining the memory. For example, odors are famous for conjuring memories from the distant past, especially those with strong emotional content, such as visits to a cookie-baking grandparent.

6. Repeat after me - When you want to remember something you have just heard or thought about, repeat it out loud. For example, if you’ve just been told someone’s name, use it when you speak with him or her: “So John, where did you meet Camille?”

7. Space it out - Instead of repeating something many times in a short period, as if you were cramming for an exam, re-study the essentials after increasingly longer periods of time — once an hour, then every few hours, then every day. Spacing out periods of study is particularly valuable when you are trying to master complicated information.

8. Make a mnemonic - Mnemonic devices are creative ways to remember lists. They can take the form of acronyms — such as the classic “Every good boy does fine,” to remember the musical notes E, G, B, D, and F on the lines of the treble clef. For older learners, a particularly helpful system is a story mnemonic — that is, a brief narrative in which each item cues you to remember the next one.

9. Challenge yourself - Engaging in activities that require you to concentrate and tax your memory will help you maintain skills as you age. Discuss books, do crossword puzzles, try new recipes, travel, and undertake projects or hobbies that require skills you aren’t familiar or comfortable with.

10.When remembering, take a deep breath in, exhale and relax. This will allow you to release any tension and resistance, thus enabling you to concentrate without trying.

'Bitch is the New Black' Tina Fey Says of Hillary Clinton on SNL

'Bitch is the New Black' Tina Fey Says of Hillary Clinton on SNL

30 Rock star Tina Fey set the bloggersphere on fire this week with a pro-Hillary Clinton rant on the first episode of Saturday Night Live since the writer's strike ended. Saying "bitch is the new black," Fey gave a passionate, thinly veiled endorsement of Clinton on SNL, urging voters on Texas and Ohio to "get on board" and vote for the Democratic presidential candidate.

As a special guest on the first new episode of Saturday Night Live since the Writer's Guild of America strike launched, Tina Fey was quick to step right back into her old place on the show. Co-hosting the "Weekend Update" with former colleague Amy Poehler once again, Fey gave her usual dry delivery of recent political and weird news. Then, all hell broke loose.

After lambasting Barack Obama and his supporters (including Oprah Winfrey and her followers), Fey transitioned into a rather unorthodox endorsement of Clinton. Calling out people who say "Hillary is a bitch," Fey said, "Let me say something about that: Yeah, she is. And so I am I and so is this one," gesturing to Amy Poehler. "Know what? Bitches get stuff done!" Fey then went on to urge voters in Texas and Ohio to "get on board" because "bitch is the new black!"

Even Hillary Clinton herself seems to be a fan of the SNL episode, saying at a rally in Houston this week that "I just have this sense that finally my opponent is getting maybe a little bit of scrutiny... How many of you saw Saturday Night Live?... This wouldn't have happened just a couple of weeks ago. People are starting to say, hey, you know what, we have two candidates..."

A weighted vest from Walk Vest allows the following benefits to burn excess calories and add muscle to lose fat.

A walk vest helps to condition core and strengthen abdominals and build bone density.

Your bones are forced to grow denser and stronger and burn more calories so you lose weight faster. It is the number one way to build bone density too – we have doctors and research to prove it.

From Walk Vest Website Press Information

What is The WALKVEST®?

RESEARCH HAS PROVEN THAT EXERCISE IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING ONE CAN DO TO PRESERVE AND INCREASE ONES BONE MASS.

"Oregon State University Study finds that elderly women can halt bone loss by exercising with a weighted vest."

"In The New England Journal of Medicine researchers concluded that walking two miles a day reduces the chance of heart attack by more than 28%."

Benefits of walking with The WALKVEST® include:

* increasing cardiovascular strength
* lowering blood pressure
* reduces stress
* lowering cholesterol
* enhancing stamina and increasing energy
* strengthening bones, muscles, and connective issues
* muscle toning

Talk to your physician regarding a BMD(bone mineral density) test, and ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE ENGAGING IN AN EXERCISE PROGRAM.

Walk Vest - Walk Vest is good for health

The Walk Vest was created to help people to lose weight and add muscle while exercising. The Walk Vest has created a certain buzz on the internet and amongst people who are particularly looking for a way to tone up much quicker.

The Walk Vest helps you to burn excess calories, tone up your muscles, condition your abs, and even build bone density. Some might even call the Walk Vest a miracle worker for losing weight and toning up your body.

The Walk Vest can add from 2 to 16 pounds to your normal body weight and can be worn while walking to add resistance safely and help your body to work harder. Because of the added resistance that the Walk Vest gives you, your bones will be forced to grow denser and stronger which helps you to burn more calories and lose weight faster.

The weights that are added to the Walk Vest slide in and out of sleeves that are sown into the vest making it easier for you to adjust the weight in which you are wearing.

The Walk Vest could really help me when I do such things as push-ups or sit-ups by adding extra weight for me to lift and it could to keep my back straight during routine exercises.

I often here of people who use a backpack to add weight onto them while they are hiking and the Walk Vest could easily be substituted for a backpack and make it much easier for someone who uses backpacks to hike by evenly distributing the weight instead of the weight shifting like it would in an ordinary backpack.

Using a Walk Vest can give you all the added benefits of exercising and it can help you get to your goal for weight loss or toning your muscles that much quicker.

A Walk Vest would be much more convenient for someone like me who uses weights when I walk. I am often self conscious about doing this and this vest could really help me when I want to walk but don't want to tote around the weights.

Railway Budget 08-09 will be people-friendly

'Railway Budget 08-09 will be people-friendly'
New Delhi: The Railway Budget for 2008-09 will be a 'people-friendly' budget, Ministry of State for Railways R Velu said on Thursday.

When asked by reporters on the sidelines of a conference here whether there would be any fare hike in the budget, he said it would be people-friendly.

"The Minister made no mention about fares as it is obvious that budget proposals are not made public prior to presentation of the Budget by the Minister of Railways in the Parliament," an official release said.

Himachal pins hope on railway budget

KUMARHARTTI: The debate has already begun in state over Railway Budget to be announced on February 26. After having failed to get anything from budget years after years the state is now expecting some favour in this year budget. Despite successive state governments efforts to find some concrete in budget the state has so far remained at bottom in list of gainers in budget.

Since Independence the state has managed to get only 36-km railway line linking Nangal with Una up to Takrala village. The couple of important railway projects planned to facilitate the economic growth of state are waiting nod from Central Railway Ministry. The major of them, Banupalli- Bilaspur- Rampur and Baddi- Chandigarh rail links can uplift economic fortunes of state in big way but apathy of railway ministry over these projects is proving a virtual disaster for state.

The two major narrow gauge rail tracks of Kalka- Shimla and Jogindernagar- Pathankot are now no more remained a joy ride. The much dependence on age old ZDM 3 engines has made the journey on these tracks a nightmare for passengers. The break downing of outdated ZDM 3 engines in mid way is now common feature on these two tracks.

A very senior leader of state political party points out, the nonchalance of centre towards state is out of imagining. The centre has given step motherly treatment to state so far. The state leaderships vigorous campaigning has too failed to find some positive outcome, he asserts. Ironically the state CM is very keen over Banupalli- Bilaspur- Rampur rail project but yet the project is hanging fire from long time.

The industrial fraternity in Baddi- Barotiwala – Nalagarh (BBN) and Parwanoo has too no clue about dilly-dally approach of center towards railway growth in state. The issue of linking Baddi with Chandigarh has highlighted at different platforms but of no avail. In the past few years, Baddi has emerged as a major industrial corridor of North India. Housing some big industries, Baddi has the potential to generate healthy freight income for Railways in case it linked directly with Chandigarh, feel office bearers of BBN industries Associations and HP Council of CII.

Says a very senior official of railways posted on Kalka-Shimla track, it is the high time for Railway Ministry to replace the old ZDM 3 engines on narrow gauge rail tracks. On an average daily an engine gets snag on these tracks and affects the traffic badly, he remarks.

The state has already two cement plants at Barmana and Dalra, points another railways official. The two more cement plants are expected to be set up in state besides setting up of big industries including hydro power projects, he remarks. The rail is a vital infrastructure to run these heavy industries smoothly, he says. The rail network to these big industries will not only provide easy mean of transport but helps to reduce pollution caused by the plying of numerous trucks in state, the official maintains.

Mega dreams for Mega Millions lottery players

Mega dreams for Mega Millions lottery players

LYNN - There is only one thing that won't change in Erica St. John's life if she manages to defy the one in 175 million odds against winning tonight's Mega Millions Lottery drawing.

"My relationship with my family - that's what is most important," St. John said Thursday as she purchased a Mega Millions ticket at Tedeschi market on Lewis Street.

Everything will change in Pat Marino's life if he wins, beginning with a new house and a new car.

Like Tedeschi regulars Jay Surette and St. John, Marino usually avoids long odds Lottery games like Mega Millions and Power Ball in favor of the continuous play opportunities afforded by Keno and Daily Race.

But, as Lottery players in Massachusetts and 11 other states can attest, not taking a chance at winning $270 million is tough to do.

"Last I checked, we were selling 3,000 tickets a minute," said Lottery spokesman Dan Rosenfeld. Tonight's Mega Millions drawing is the fifth largest jackpot in the game's history. The prize hit $390 million on March 6, 2007 with two winning tickets sold in New Jersey and Georgia.

The winning five numbers and winning Mega ball number will be drawn on Channel 5 at 11:24 p.m. The winner gets the choice of taking the prize money in equal annual installments over 20 years or accepting a $164.3 million pre-tax cash option.

Surette said he will retire from his maintenance worker job and donate a lot of money to charity if he wins.

"I'll take good care of my kids and my 2-year-old grandson."
All three players said they are ready to weather the possible pitfalls associated with mega wealth.

"When you get a new car, they give you an owner's manual. They don't give you one for your life if you win Mega Millions," Marino said.

Couch potatoes, heed my words. If you're still getting your daily dose of television over an analog signal, it's time for an upgrade to the digital realm. Not only will every channel look crystal clear and you'll have the opportunity to watch your favorite sports game in high definition, but more than likely you'll also be exposed to a wealth of new digital-only channels you never even knew existed.

Obama's First Law Known As 'Google For Government'

Obama's First Law Known As 'Google For Government'

(CBS) CHICAGO Some A-list celebrities now say U.S. Sen. Barack Obama is their presidential pick for 2008. Oprah Winfrey and Halle Berry have gone public urging him to run.

Tuesday was a big day for the junior senator from Illinois. For the first time, a bill he sponsored became law.

CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports the fruits of Obama's legal labor will be found on the Internet.

The new law provides Americans with a new website, what Obama calls a "Google for government." Eventually, anyone will be able to type in a few key words and learn details of where federal tax dollars go, and perhaps whether those trillions are being spent wisely or foolishly.

While he was the last legislator President George W. Bush saluted, it was still a big day for a freshman who's joked about how tough it is when you're almost dead last in seniority.

"I finally got a bill passed," Obama said.

It's a good-government measure designed to give journalists and average citizens access to budget secrets Washington insiders now try to hide, like that notorious "earmark" done late at night authorizing hundreds of millions of dollars for a bridge to a virtually uninhabited island up in Alaska, the so-called Bridge to Nowhere.

"All of us have an interest in making sure that our tax money is spent wisely. If it's going to bridges to nowhere in Alaska, if it's going to some fat cat contractor who has a relationship with a legislator, that's money that could've gone to teacher salaries," Obama said.

Obama cited the new law as proof that, even though he is sometimes criticized by fellow Democrats for cooperating with Senate majority Reoublicans, the effort is worth it.

"It will shine the light. The famous saying that sunshine is the best disinfectant. This will apply some sunshine on the budgeting process. It's just one step. We've got to take more steps to control how we spend money here and make sure it's spent wisely," Obama said.

The Tracks of My Tears

The Tracks of My Tears
Smokey Robinson, Motown
People say I'm the life of the party
Cause I tell a joke or two
Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
Deep inside I'm blue

So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
Just look closer, it's easy to trace
The tracks of my tears
I need you, need you

Since you left me if you see me with another girl
Seeming like I'm having fun
Although she may be cute she's just a substitute
'Cause you're the permanent one

Outside, I'm masquerading
Inside, my hope is fading
Just a clown, oh yeah since you put me down
My smile is my make-up I wear since my break-up with you

Chorus

Isn't She Lovely lyrics

Stevie Wonder - Isn't She Lovely lyrics

Artist: Stevie Wonder

Isn't She Lovely lyrics

Isn't she lovely
Isn't she wonderfull
Isn't she precious
Less than one minute old
I never thought through love we'd be
Making one as lovely as she
But isn't she lovely made from love

Isn't she pretty
Truly the angel's best
Boy, I'm so happy
We have been heaven blessed
I can't believe what God has done
through us he's given life to one
But isn't she lovely made from love

Isn't she lovely
Life and love are the same
Life is Aisha
The meaning of her name
Londie, it could have not been done
Without you who conceived the one
That's so very lovely made from love

Uncle Kracker - Drift Away lyrics

Uncle Kracker - Drift Away lyrics

Drift Away lyrics

Day after day I'm more confused
Yet I look for the light
Through the pourin' rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
And I'm feeling the strain
Ain't it a shame

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I want to get lost in your rock and roll
And drift away
[repeat]

Beginning to think that I'm wasting time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
Now I'm counting on you
To carry me through

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I want to get lost in your rock and roll
And drift away
[repeat]

And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feeling blue
The guitar's coming through to soothe me

Thanks for the joy that you're given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
Your rythm and rhyme and harmony
You've helped me along
Makin' me strong

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I want to get lost in your rock and roll
And drift away
[repeat]
Na, na, now won't ya
Won't ya take, oh ha ..take me

American Idol results surprising

Oh, the drama of it all. The tears. The gnashing of teeth. The denial. The anger. The pain. No, we're not talking about the Clinton campaign. We're talking about who will be the first American Idol cut.
Tonight it came down to four - two boys and two girls who were sent home. Is it just me or do these results shows get longer every year? What happened to the half hour results show? I guess those come later. Anyway, here's how things came down:

Joanna Borgella, our lovely plus-sized model was sent packing. It's a pity, considering she at least had a PERSONALITY, unlike a few others who will be sticking around (namely, Kady and Kristie). But she fell flat last night, so she only has herself to blame.

Amy Davis couldn't even be helped by a boost from VoteForTheWorst.com, who was pushing for "Worsters" to get behind her. Their darling, though, is Danny Noriega, and that's probably where most of their votes went. So Amy and her creepy Bride of Frankenstein hair are out.

The boys were no surprise. I had predicted that Garret Haley's strange, poofy hair might keep him in for another round, but his look actually worked against him. Obviously his voice did, too.

I'm sure Simon is exuding I-told-you-so-ness to Paula and Randy regarding young Colton's cut. Simon warned against bringing him on the show, favoring instead Politician Boy, who also would have been cut early, but may have provided slightly better TV.

There's still plenty of baggage to get rid of next week. In fact after seeing Week 1's less than stellar performances, it appears it will be several weeks until any painful cuts have to be made.

Groovy Kind of Love

A Groovy Kind of Love
“A Groovy Kind of Love” is a pop song written by Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager. It is heavily based on the Rondo movement of Sonatina in G major, op. 36 no. 5 by Muzio Clementi.

The song was released first by Diane & Annita in 1965. The same year, The Mindbenders released it as their debut single and reached #2 in the UK charts.

In 1988, Phil Collins covered the song for the movie Buster. The Mindbenders' version reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the UK Singles Chart; Collins's version went one better, hitting #1 in both the U.S. and UK charts. Kit Carson, America's Meanest Cowboy, Featured On PBS Special

Because he led the U.S. effort in the wholesale annihilation of the Navajo nation and its 300-mile death march known as "Long Walk," Kit Carson is remembered by some as everything bad about the country's Westward expansion.

But Carson, who had nothing to do with the myths created about him in cheap novels, was a former trapper well versed in tribal ways who was accepted by many chieftains and married an Arapaho woman. The complexities of Carson, who helped track what became the Oregon Trail, is the subject of a new "American Experience" (CPTV, 9 p.m.).

Remote Patrol
The three-hour "Inside the Vietnam War" (National Geographic Channel, 8 p.m.) seems sometimes as long as the conflict itself. Nonetheless, it finds a number of its soldiers, now quite old, talking about its various battles. Among them is Philip Caputo of Norwalk, author of "A Rumor of War."
The winner of the initial "The Pussycat Dolls Present: Search for the Next Doll" chose not to join the recording group after all. So things have been altered for the follow-up "The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious" (The CW, 9 p.m.). This time, young women sing and dance and wear slutty clothing to get in the running for a new trio with the predetermined name. It's rather like "Making the Band 4" (MTV, 10 p.m.), except that instead of Diddy, there's the returning judges panel of Robin Antin, Ron Fair and Lil' Kim. Hosted by Mark McGrath, whose "Fly" is a tryout song, the drama once more is all about living together and those unplanned trips in an ambulance.

On another new reality series, "My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad" (NBC, 9 p.m.), kids and their fathers compete to prove the old schoolyard taunt and eventually win money. Among the challenges: Human Dart Board, Spinning Discs, Snake Bobbing, Uphill Battle, Target Practice, Quiz Round, Scorpion King and something called Paper Boy Shoot-Out. Dan Cortese hosts. What good can come of this? Well, at least it has delayed the start of "The Baby Borrowers."

The two-hour season finale of "Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann" (ABC, 8 p.m.) pits Bruno Tonioli's quartet against Carrie Ann Inaba's quintet for a recording contract. The most important thing about the show, though, may be the announcement of the participants for the next season of the pair's better-known show, "Dancing with the Stars," which returns next month.

It's also the winter finale for "Prison Break" (Fox, 8 p.m.) before an episode of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (Fox, 9 p.m.) that flashes "back" to 2027.

The auto-race network introduces its first game show, "Pass Time" (Speed, 7:30 p.m.).

Nothing kills humor like analyzing it. Yet here is "The History of the Joke" (History, 9 p.m.).

Jodhaa Akbar could make even more money than OSO

Getting a royal welcome on both sides of the Atlantic, Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar, grabbed an estimated $1.3 million in North America and $750,000 in the United Kingdom over the weekend.

Factoring in the Gulf countries, the Caribbean and Australia, the three day haul could reach an awesome $3 million.

The film may not have crossover appeal to the mainstream audiences but anyone who reads the opening of The New York Times review may be tempted to see it. 'They may not make'em like they used to in Hollywood,' critic Rachel Saltz wrote, 'but sometimes in India they still do. Jodhaa Akbar... is filmmaking on the grand scale of Cecil B De Mille (The Ten Commandments), with romance, stirring battles, and enough elephants and gold to sink the Titanic [Images].'

The US box-office was especially impressive given the awful weather conditions in the Midwest.

"If the goodwill and enthusiasm for the film continues, and we at UTV feel it will, Jodhaa Akbar could make even more money than Om Shanti Om," said Lokesh Dhar for distributor UTV. "We are not looking at the success of this film in terms of another hit for UTV (which has distributed hits like Don). It could become the all-time highest grossing Bollywood film in North America."

Farah Khan's [Images] OSO starring Shah Rukh Khan [Images], who also produced it, grossed about $3.8 million in North America and holds the record.

"Despite the fact that Jodhaa Akbar is three-and-a-half hours long," Dhar continued, "and theatres are having less number of shows, we are doing extraordinary business."

Review: Jodhaa Akbar is okay but too long
The film, which got decent reviews from many mainstream publications including The New York Times and a few pans like the one in the San Francisco Chronicle, had a record 135 prints released in North America. In the United Kingdom it has some 70 prints.

The full week's gross outside India could exceed $4.5 million. Even if the film's takings were to fall by 50 percent in subsequent weeks as it traditionally happens for Bollywood movies, it could still end up with some $8 million.

Unlike in India where the entertainment tax takes away nearly 50 percent of the box office collection, Bollywood producers get about 65 percent of the overseas take.

Bollywood insiders believe that even if Jodhaa Akbar does not do spectacular business in India, the overseas moolah will help it recuperate its reported $10 million budget.

Review: Jodhaa Akbar is a spectacular watch
Another reason why the film may not suffer a steep decline in the second week is that there are no big movies challenging Jodhaa Akbar for several weeks, till the action thriller Race, which is also distributed by UTV.

"We strongly feel that Jodhaa Akbar is not going to be a one week phenomenon," Dhar said. "Many people are telling us that they are seeing the film two or three times, taking friends and family members who may not usually see films in theatres. The word has gone out that this is one film you ought to see on the big screen first."

Indian Americans are also spreading the word that Jodhaa Akbar is not like the typical Bollywood production, and some of them are quoting reviews like the one in The New York Times.

'These royals are played by Hrithik Roshan [Images] and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,' Saltz continued, 'two rather astonishing specimens of human beauty. Neither is a great actor, but both know what's required of a star and seem to the palace born.'

She did not forget the music and Kiiran Deohans for his cinematography. 'The film bounces along to a memorable score by A R Rahman. (I am still humming the songs),' Saltz wrote.

Giving the film four stars out of five, the BBC's Tajpal Rathore wrote: 'One is perhaps starting to expect too much from director Ashutosh Gowarikar after such masterpieces like Lagaan [Images] and Swades [Images]. But he seems to raise the bar with his historic magnum opus, Jodhaa Akbar.'

'Extensive though it is, Jodhaa Akbar cannot be discussed using small talk,' Rathore wrote. 'Everything in the film is big and grand: the palaces, the armies and most importantly, the love story. It hits at the heartstrings and somehow has enough energy to sustain itself through the bloated script that perhaps should've been chopped. Ravishing Rai is convincing enough but it's Roshan's majestic performance as the love-struck warrior that packs the punch; it's his film from start to finish.'

Gowariker knows how to tell a story, declared Sandip Ray in the San Francisco Chronicle, referring specially to Lagaan. But in the new film, the review said, he seems overwhelmed by the sheer weight of history.

'The never-ending opening sequence, a CliffsNotes version of Indian history in superstar Amitabh Bachchan's [Images] sonorous baritone, doesn't help either,' Roy added.' Or perhaps the film just topples over under the sheer weight of all that gold jewelry.'

The problem with Jodha and Akbar is that they are both too noble, the reviewer continued.

'Epic stories need epic tragedies or at least forbidden love,' he added.' In the 1960 classic Mughal-E-Azam, the rebellious prince (actually the son of Akbar) falls in love with the beautiful courtesan, and her defiant songs became the anthem of star-crossed lovers. (You still hear South Asians singing it at gay pride parades.)'

But there are moments when the film manages to break free of its limitations, the review said. 'Jodha and Akbar duel in an empty palace courtyard, their swordplay turning into foreplay,' it explained. 'A crowd of Sufis whirl, their white outfits glowing against the brick red earth, and the emperor leaves his seat to dance ecstatically with them. These are the real human moments in the film. One just wishes there were a few more.'

Many viewers in New York and New Jersey cinemas said they were not deterred by the film's length. "We have watched on DVD some films which are just about two hours long and we have found them boring," said a 50-year-old man who had driven 40 miles from Connecticut to see the film in a New York theatre with his wife and grown children "But if a film is well made, who worries about the time? And this kind of a film one must first see in a theatre, never mind what good home entertainment system we have at home."

Adam Corolla to go ‘Dancing With the Stars’

LOS ANGELES - Radio personality Adam Carolla will lace up his dancing shoes for the new season of ABC’s "Dancing With the Stars," Carolla announced today.

The funnyman will take to the ballroom floor with blonde dancing sensation Julianne Hough, who nabbed last season’s top prize alongside race-car driver Helio Castroneves.

Hough will no doubt be looking to three-peat with the jock, as she also won season 4 with speed-skating champ, Apolo Anton Ohno.

Carolla made the announcement on his Free FM breakfast show in Los Angeles on Monday.

The rest of the new "Dancing" contestants will be announced tonight on ABC during the season finale of "Dance War: Bruno Vs. Carrie Ann."

Meanwhile, rumors have been circulating that Florence Henderson, formerly of "The Brady Bunch" may enter the competition too. It’s already clear she is a big fan of the show, having been spotted in the "Dancing" audience several times last season.

Also rumored for the show? Figure skating champ Kristi Yamaguchi, actress Marlee Matlin and Pricilla Presley.

In related news, pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who was paired with Spice Girl Mel B. last season, will not be returning for the show's sixth season, his rep confirmed to People.

“He just needs a break,” an ABC spokesperson told People. “He is part of the Dancing family, and he will be back.”

'Caller ID for the Internet' ziggs

Website allows users to see who has been searching their name
Fifty million times a day, someone, somewhere "Googles" a person's name. Now, technology can help you figure out who's Googling you.

Elizabeth Yekhtikian admits she's hooked on the visitor tracking service from Ziggs.com, a site similar to Facebook.com that caters to young professionals. At least once a day she gets an email alerting her she's been checked out.

"I can check on the site and it shows me with little maps where the searches are coming from, and from exactly which town, within which state or part of the country or the world," said Yekhtikian. "That's kind of cool."

A similar site, naymz.com, helped Katie May figure out that an ex-boyfriend, with whom she didn't want to maintain contact, had been searching online for her.

"He works for a university and all those searches were coming from that university," said May.

Ziggs CEO Tim DeMello calls the technology "caller ID for the Internet." When someone clicks on the Ziggs profile, the member receives an alert.

"Every computer has a Web browser that has an IP address, which basically gives you a location," said DeMello. "It gives you the ability to time stamp it. So if someone goes to Google and they are in San Diego, we clearly know the time they went on and the time it came into us. We know what browser it came from."

DeMello insisted that the company would never reveal the actual name of the person. "We think that it is a real privacy issue. We need to make sure we always think about it."

But security experts say it wouldn't be hard to take that next step and get the name and address.

"Right now, with separate pieces of information, you can tie all of that together," said Leslie Reis of the John Marshall Law School.

"You can identify somebody right down to either a location or a particular identity."

Keeping private
Experts say that protecting privacy on the Internet means working harder than ever to be careful of what you reveal online. But Paul Parisi, a privacy expert who runs a company called DNSstuff, said the only way to totally protect yourself is not to log on at all.

"All the data is there. Someone just has to put it together," Parisi said. "I think it's an interesting conundrum we are going to face over the next few years as our actions online are tracked and available for others to watch."

Interning at Ziggs
On today's Web, amateur bloggers command publishing space alongside our most seasoned writers; citizen shoppers join the ranks of Consumer Reports; and classmates create friend groups with the scope and influence of master networkers. Interning at Ziggs has allowed me to experience a striking offline parallel to the culture of the new Web in which amateurs are immediately granted an all access pass to participate on a meaningful level with top professionals. I joined Ziggs while the company was in the midst of launching the Ziggs Hub. The culture of transparency and across-the-board participation that rules the Web was immediately palpable when I was offered a seat at the table at company planning meetings and encouraged to digest and contribute to new business and marketing developments.

I have been using social media for many years, but soon into my internship at Ziggs I realized how much I still had to learn. The biggest challenge was learning the language - the tech code: spider, bug, beta, tag, devweb, CPM, CTR, VOIP, Vlog, build, track, RSS, FTP. It is a language of acronyms and applications and, as a self-proclaimed non-techie, I was not prepared. At my first morning meeting with the team, I could understand about half of what everyone was saying. Ziggs has offered me a crash course in what is happening on the Web where techies have taken over the social spheres of average users and are gradually infiltrating IT jargon into daily communications between friends.
I have never been an intensely out-of-the box thrill seeker, but the Web today still feels like the wild west of the business world. It remains a relatively new, unexplored territory where room for innovation driven by instinct is as much written into business plans as traditional strategy and Six Sigma metrics. While my classmates are on a morning Starbucks run for colleagues at a traditional, vertically structured company, at Ziggs I always need to be totally plugged into the site, exploring new functionality, ready to adapt at the drop of new code for our point releases. As a young professional, this open-source, nimble-enough-to-innovate-everyday pace at Ziggs is refreshing and keeps me on my toes.

Searching Your Searcher

It happens about 50 million times a day: someone Googles a proper name--and it could be yours.

ABC 7's Alan Krashesky found new technology that can help you figure out who is searching for you and viewing your website profiles.
In today's online networking generation, it's important for you to know who is looking at all of those professional and social websites that everyone's putting up. It's new internet technology known as "visitor tracking." But "searching your searcher" raises privacy concerns for people who thought their searches were anonymous.

Who doesn't want to know if people are Googling them?" said Katie May.
It's kind of like caller ID for the internet. May says she felt empowered when she was able to figure out who was checking her out.
"It makes me feel like i am spying a little bit ," May said.
The Lakeview resident says she used "visitor tracking" technology to figure out that a former friend was repeatedly Googling her and clicking on one of her personal website profiles.
"He works for a university and all of those searches were coming from that university," said May.
Valuable information, because she says the same guy was also sending her inappropriate e-mails. These visitor tracking services can be downloaded to social and professional networking profiles, and it's already built in to others.
"You shouldn't actually think that just because you are on the web you are completely anonymous," said Tony Czupryna, Naymz.
Depending on the service, you may even get your searchers full name, if they are logged in to the same site. All tracking services provide the city and state where the searcher lives along with the time of the search. They also show you the specific terms used to look for you in search engines.
Some services also show the searcher's IP address. That's a number specifically assigned to their computer. You can also learn the internet provider the searcher is using. It can be an internet service like Comcast or the exact company where your searcher works. This can help you determine who's looking at you, whether it's a prospective employer or a recent date.
Naymz.com, based in Chicago, and Ziggs.com both offer visitor tracking. So when someone types in your name to search about you and clicks on your profile you get a visitor tracking alert.
"Right now, with enough separate pieces of information, you can tie all of that together and identify somebody right down to either a location or a particular identity," said Leslie Reis, John Marshall Law School.
Reis is the director of the Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law at the John Marshall Law School. She says it also opens the door to internet privacy issues.
"Transparency is the real issue. What a particular website is doing with your information, what information a particular website is collecting about you, how long they are keeping it, how they are using it and who they are sharing it with," Reis said.
Ziggs.com's visitor tracking does not supply names or IP addresses. Its creator says the service isn't just about who is looking but knowing how many people may be interested in your life.
"It's really nice to know when you are in the midst of having conversations with people, whether they be professionally or personally, that someone has actually gone to your page and taken a look at the information," said Tim DeMello, Ziggs.com.
But even Katie May admits there's a flip side to all this.
"It weirds me out a little bit to know that someone that I am searching can Know i am searching them," May said.
Most of these services are free and some charge a small monthly fee as a premium member on their networking sites. Police have been using the technology for years to catch online criminals, but police then subpoena IP addresses information from internet providers to get exact names and locations of users.

Dolphins' Taylor to participate on Dancing with Stars

Dolphins' Taylor to participate on Dancing with Stars
Jason Taylor became one of the top pass-rushers in football by developing his footwork against blockers. Now, he's ready to take his game to a different level on a different platform.

Taylor

Taylor was officially announced Monday night as the NFL's first active player to be a participant in ABC's Dancing With the Stars. Jerry Rice was the first former NFL player to be a contestant. Former Cowboy Emmitt Smith followed.

Taylor informed the Dolphins Monday that he was going to compete on the intense network show starting in March. He will compete a couple times a week and is optimistic of his chances to be one of the finalists.

The interesting twist to Taylor's involvement is that he opens the door for current athletes to participate. Offseason programs start in March to prepare for the NFL season. The dancing requires intense physical conditioning, which is one of Taylor's strong suits.

Dancing With The Stars will be an interesting training session for Taylor, the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 and one of the game's most recognizable faces.

Taylor won't be the only athlete participating. Tennis player Monica Seles and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi will also take part.

Jodha Akbar

“Gowarikar came before the media with half a dozen history books and said that he researched the subject thoroughly before making the film.” You will just have to imagine my cheshire cat grin upon reading that sentence in an otherwise eye-rolling reportage on the “controversy” surrounding Ashutosh Gowariker’s bollywood spectacular Jodhaa Akbar. I want every director of every historical movie to come with such arsenal to press conferences.

The movie, which I had the pleasure of seeing, along with two dear friends, at a run-down, mob-front, theater on the north side of Chicago, is underwhelming. Purportedly, it is the story of the Mughal emperor, Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar (1556-1605) and his “romance” with the Rajput princess Jodhaa. The controversy seems to be in the realm of that pesky popular memory and history. Apparently, the offending parties claim that Jodha Bai is the Rajput wife of Jahangir - Akbar’s successor - rather than Akbar’s wife. And that brings some dishonor to some one. I really stopped reading after a while.

The movie doesn’t deserve any controversy. Irfan Habib and Muhammad Amin have the right attitude as historians: “… nothing to get worked up about”. Because if historians are indeed to huff and puff, the one-on-one combat sequences for all of Hindoostan are far more an egregious crime against history than whether Jodha Bai was Akbar’s wife or daughter in law. Man Singh, Pleez. Akbar did have (a number of) Rajput wives, and other wives, and not every one’s name is recorded. The one from the movie is named only by her given title, Maryam-e Zaman (Mary of the Times), in the medieval sources. A title that gave 19th century popular colonial narrators all kinds of wrong ideas about Christian influences on Akbar.

What I did find more troublesome than Jodha Bai, was the particular brand of Hindu-secularism at display in the movie. Wherein the open-ness of Akbar is needed only to give triumphal space for the Hindu dieties. And while Outlook India notes that this movie is the most noted example of an intercommunal romance where the man is muslim, I simply noted that every villain in the movie is a devout Muslim. Jodhaa Akbar, is a story about contemporary India and the world we live in, not about Akbar the Mughal King.

As teaching tool, I appreciated the bits of social and court historical display available in some scenes - the Diwan-i Aam, the Parcheesi, the night camps - but the rest would have to be avoided outside of a class on popular history and memory. My favorite scene was the “throw him over head first”. I dug.

For those who care, I have put the account made famous by British Orientalist about Jodhaa and Akbar, below the fold.

Here, then, is the account given by Vincent Smith - “the hegemonic historian of ancient India”, as Inden pegged him - in his biography of Akbar written in 1909. It informs some bits of “history” of the movie:

One night, Akbar, when on a hunting excursion, was Pilgrim-passing through a village near Agra when he happened to hear a party of Indian minstrels singing the praises of first Khwaja Muin uddin, the renowned saint buried at Ajmer, and was thus inspired to make a pilgrimage to the tomb of the holy man. Accordingly, in the middle of January 1562, he started for Ajmer with a small retinue, hunting on his way. At Deosa, midway between Agra and Ajmer, he received Raja Bihar Mall, the chief of Amber or Jaipur in Rajputana, who offered his eldest daughter to Akbar in marriage. The court made only a brief stay at Ajmir and returned by forced marches to Agra, leaving the heavy
camp equipage to follow. The marriage was celebrated at Sambhar. Man Singh, nephew and adopted son of Raja Bhagwan Das, the heir of Raja Bihar Mall, was taken into the imperial service, and rose ultimately to high office.

The bride subsequently became the mother of Jahangir. Her posthumous official title, Maryam zamani (or -uz zamani), ‘ the Mary of the age’, has caused her to be confounded sometimes with Akbar’s mother, whose title was Maryam-makani,’ dwelling with Mary’. The dust of Akbar’s first Hindu consort lies in a fine mausoleum situated near Akbar’s tomb at Sikandara. The building has been restored
by judicious measures of conservation.

Although it has been asserted that Humayun had one Hindu consort, that lady, if she really existed, does not appear to have exercised any influence. Akbar’s marriages with Hindu princesses, on the contrary, produced important effects both on his personal rule of life and on his public policy. His leanings towards Hinduism will be more conveniently discussed at a subsequent stage, and the effects
of the Rajput matrimonial alliances on public affairs also will become more apparent as the story proceeds. But at this point of the narrative so much may be said, that the marriage with the Amber princess secured the powerful support of her family throughout the reign, and offered a proof manifest to all the world that Akbar had decided to be the Badshah of his whole people—Hindus as well as Muhammadans. While the court was on its way back to Agra one of the keepers of the hunting leopards was convicted of stealing a pair of shoes. Akbar ordered the thief’s feet to be cut off.

Later in life he would hardly have inflicted such a savage punishment for a petty theft.

- Akbar, the Great Mogul.

That's right. K.I.T.T. is back.

Kind of.

Steve and I just watched what I am presuming is the premier of the new Knight Rider series. It was billed as a movie, but the rumor I heard is that it's actually going to be a series. For those of you who know Steve personally, you know that this means that he was very excited when he found out about this movie yesterday.

This time around, K.I.T.T. is a hawt Ford Mustang. The driver is Mike Traceur - a less hokey guy than Michael Knight was, even though he's Michael Knight's son. The premise is the same: super awesome super-powered talking car, dashing young man "driving" around in said car saving the day. I have to admit, after watching this new installment of the series (I'm considering it a much better continuation, actually) I am excited and hopeful for more episodes. They did an awesome job with the revival and I'm sure that tons of old Knight Rider fans agree with me.

Since "24" hasn't been on this year, the new Knight Rider is a suitable replacement. I deem it so.

I leave you with this interview with The Hoff. I think he's intoxicated. Either that or just... well... The Hoff. Hokey Hoff.
